Chapter 1

PART 1:

“She’s unstable, Your Honor.”

Daniel said it like he had practiced in the mirror.

Emma sat at the defense table with one hand resting over her swollen belly.

Eight months pregnant.

Exhausted.

Barely sleeping.

But still there.

Still breathing.

Still fighting.

Daniel stood across from her in a charcoal suit, pointing at her like she was the criminal.

“She’s doing this for attention,” he said. “She’s emotional. Manipulative. She has been making false accusations because she can’t accept the divorce.”

Beside him, Vanessa crossed her legs and smiled.

Perfect hair.

Perfect nails.

Perfect little diamond bracelet Daniel had bought while Emma was still wearing her wedding ring.

Vanessa leaned toward his attorney and said just loud enough for Emma to hear, “She’s giving up everything anyway.”

The courtroom went still.

Emma closed her eyes for one second.

Not because she was defeated.

Because the baby kicked.

A sharp little reminder.

You’re not alone.

She lifted her head.

Her voice shook, but it did not break.

“I only want my baby far away from you.”

The silence after that was heavy.

Daniel’s hand tightened around the back of his chair.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared for half a second.

Judge Whitaker watched all three of them from the bench.

Then Emma turned slowly toward the side row.

A small girl sat there with a court-appointed child advocate, clutching an old brown teddy bear against her chest.

Lily.

Daniel’s seven-year-old daughter from his first marriage.

Emma had raised her since she was four.

Packed her lunches.

Braided her hair.

Held her through nightmares.

Loved her without ever asking to replace her mother.

Lily’s eyes were red.

Her little fingers dug into the bear’s worn fur.

Emma looked at her gently.

“Lily,” she whispered, “what did you hear?”

Daniel’s face drained of color.

“Objection,” his attorney snapped.

But Judge Whitaker stood before he finished.

He struck the gavel once.

Hard.

May you like

“Bring the child forward.”

👉 But when Lily stepped into the aisle with that teddy bear, Daniel realized the court already knew more than he thought.
