Chapter 6
PART 6:
Vanessa’s confidence was gone now.
She looked smaller without her smile.
Daniel looked at her like she had caused this.
That was always his way.
Someone else was always responsible for the fire he started.
The judge ordered a recess.
But nobody left freely.
Daniel was instructed to remain on one side of the courtroom.
Vanessa was separated from him.
Lily was escorted into a private room with the child advocate.
Emma was taken to a quiet space near the clerk’s office because her hands were shaking and the baby would not stop kicking.
Her attorney brought her water.
“You did well,” he said.
Emma laughed once, broken and tired.
“I didn’t do anything.”
“You stayed.”
That was when she cried.
Not loudly.
Just enough to let the fear leave her body for a minute.
When court resumed, Judge Whitaker’s ruling came fast.
Daniel’s request to declare Emma unstable was denied.
His emergency custody motion was denied.
His access to Lily was temporarily suspended pending investigation.
A protective order was granted for Emma and the unborn baby.
Vanessa’s sworn statement was referred for review due to apparent false claims.
The judge also ordered Daniel to vacate the marital home until further hearing.
Daniel stood there stunned.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Daniel.”
He pulled away from her.
That one small movement told Emma everything.
He had never loved Vanessa enough to protect her either.
He had only loved having someone help him win.
Judge Whitaker looked at Emma.
“Mrs. Parker, you and the children will remain under court protection.”
Children.
The word made Emma’s throat tighten.
Lily was not legally hers.
Not yet.
But the judge had heard enough to know family was not always the person shouting “my daughter” in court.
Sometimes family was the woman a frightened little girl ran to with a teddy bear full of truth.
Daniel turned toward Emma as officers approached.
His voice dropped into the tone he used at home.
“This isn’t over.”
Judge Whitaker heard him.
“It is for today,” he said sharply. “And if you threaten her again, it will continue in criminal court.”
Daniel shut his mouth.
