Chapter 2

PART 2:

A bailiff opened the back door.

Lily stepped into the aisle, holding the teddy bear so tightly it looked like the only thing keeping her upright.

Judge Whitaker looked at Daniel.

His voice turned cold.

“Your daughter already told this court enough.”

Daniel froze.

For two years, Emma had tried to keep Daniel’s house peaceful.

That was what she called it when she was lying to herself.

Peaceful.

Not safe.

Not loving.

Just quiet enough for Lily to sleep.

When Emma married Daniel, everyone told her how lucky she was.

He was handsome.

Successful.

A respected real estate developer.

A widower with a little girl who needed a mother’s tenderness.

Emma had fallen in love with Lily first.

Daniel came after.

At the wedding, Lily had held Emma’s hand and whispered, “Can I call you Mommy sometimes?”

Emma cried so hard she ruined her makeup.

Daniel laughed and kissed both of them.

Back then, he seemed gentle.

Grateful.

Protective.

But after Emma became pregnant, something changed.

Daniel stopped coming home for dinner.

Then stopped coming home at all.

Vanessa started appearing at company events.

Then in phone calls.

Then in the passenger seat of Daniel’s car.

Daniel told Emma she was imagining things.

Then he told her pregnancy made women paranoid.

Then he told her no judge would trust a hormonal woman over a man with his reputation.

The first time Emma found Vanessa’s lipstick in Daniel’s jacket, he laughed.

The second time, he called her pathetic.

The third time, Vanessa texted Emma directly.

“You should learn when to leave with dignity.”

Emma did not answer.

She was busy helping Lily with spelling homework.

👉 But Lily noticed everything Daniel thought a child was too young to understand.
