Chapter 4
PART 4:
The next morning, Daniel filed for divorce.
He asked for control of the marital home.
He asked the court to restrict Emma’s access to Lily.
He asked for a psychiatric evaluation.
He claimed Emma had threatened to disappear with the unborn baby.
Vanessa submitted a statement saying she had “personally witnessed Emma’s erratic behavior.”
Daniel’s attorney painted Emma as unstable before the first hearing even began.
For a week, Emma felt the walls closing in.
Her doctor told her stress was dangerous.
Her bank card stopped working.
Daniel changed the security code at the house.
Lily cried when Daniel told her Emma might not be allowed to see her anymore.
That was when Lily gave Emma the teddy bear.
They were sitting on the edge of Lily’s bed, surrounded by stuffed animals and half-packed clothes.
Lily pushed the bear into Emma’s lap.
“Mommy,” she whispered, “he heard them.”
Emma stared at her.
“What?”
Lily touched the bear’s paw.
Static crackled.
Then Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“She won’t leave. She thinks being pregnant protects her.”
Emma stopped breathing.
Vanessa’s voice followed.
“You need to get her declared unstable before the baby is born.”
Emma’s whole body went cold.
Lily’s chin trembled.
“I’m sorry I listened.”
Emma pulled her close.
“No, baby. You were brave.”
Emma did not post the recording.
She did not threaten Daniel.
She took Lily and went straight to her attorney.
By the time they entered court, Judge Whitaker had already reviewed enough to request that Lily speak privately with a child advocate.
Daniel did not know that.
Vanessa did not know that.
They walked into court believing Emma was alone.
Weak.
Pregnant.
