Chapter 3
PART 3:
Lily noticed more than Daniel thought.
Children always do.
She noticed when Daniel slammed cabinets after Emma asked where he had been.
She noticed when Vanessa came to the house while Emma was upstairs resting.
She noticed when Daniel told Emma, “After the baby comes, you will sign what I tell you to sign.”
Emma tried to protect Lily from the worst of it.
She sent her to her room.
Turned on cartoons.
Played music too loudly.
But Lily’s bedroom was above the kitchen.
And her old teddy bear had a small voice recorder inside.
Not a hidden spy device.
A toy Daniel’s first wife had bought years earlier so Lily could record bedtime messages.
After her mother died, Lily used it when she felt scared.
She would press the bear’s paw and whisper her feelings into it.
Nobody remembered the recorder still worked.
Except Lily.
One night, Emma woke up on the nursery floor.
She had been organizing baby clothes when dizziness hit.
She called Daniel from the hallway.
He did not come.
Downstairs, Vanessa’s voice floated up from the kitchen.
“You need to get her declared unstable before the baby is born.”
Emma froze.
Daniel answered, low and angry.
“She won’t leave. She thinks being pregnant protects her.”
“It does, unless you make her look dangerous.”
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa laughed softly.
“Pregnancy hormones. Crying fits. Threatening to take your child. Judges see it all the time.”
Daniel said, “Once she signs the agreement, the house, the company shares, everything stays with me.”
“And Lily?”
“She’ll say whatever I tell her to say.”
Emma’s hand covered her mouth.
She did not know Lily was awake.

She did not know Lily was standing at the top of the stairs in pink pajamas, teddy bear pressed to her chest, recording every word because she thought if the bear remembered, maybe someone would believe them.
👉 The next morning, Daniel filed for divorce — but he had no idea Lily’s teddy bear had already saved the truth.
