Chapter 12 - Lily Knew Who I Was

The live feed shook as the van moved.
Lily sat strapped into a gray seat.
She did not appear injured.
That was the only mercy.
Her red coat was zipped to her throat.
Evelyn sat beside her, face still hidden beyond the camera frame.
“Where are you taking her?” I asked.
Evelyn laughed softly.
“Home.”
Lily looked toward the camera.
Her eyes were mine.
“Are you Amy?”
My chest broke open.
“Yes.”
She leaned closer.
“Uncle Henry said you were sick.”
I looked at him.
Henry released Cross and turned away.
Lily continued.
“He said you forgot me.”
“No.”
The word came out too quickly.
Too desperate.
“I never knew where you were.”
She studied my face.
“Do you remember the song?”
I froze.
“What song?”
She hummed four notes.
A lullaby my mother used to sing.
The same melody I often heard in dreams after my appendectomy.
I had sung to her.
Even sedated, even for moments, I had held my daughter.
Cross looked toward the screen.
“That wasn’t in the file.”
Evelyn’s voice changed.
“What song?”
Lily stopped humming.
She had surprised Evelyn too.
That mattered.
Daniel noticed.
“She remembers the hospital.”
Lily looked frightened.
“A lady told me never to sing it.”
“Which lady?” I asked.
She glanced beside her.
Not Evelyn.
Someone else.
The camera widened slightly.
A second woman sat across from them.
Older.
Short gray hair.
Charcoal sweater.
My mother’s clothes.
I turned toward Kathleen.
She was still beside my bed.
The woman in the van had her face.
My mother stared at the screen.
“No.”
Evelyn said, “Families are easier to control when every role can be replaced.”
Daniel whispered, “Another double.”
The woman in the van smiled at Lily.
“Tell Amy who raised you.”
Lily looked at her.
“Grandma.”
Kathleen staggered.
I gripped her hand.
“That is not you.”
She shook her head.
“I never saw her.”
Cross watched silently.
Laura looked at him.
“How many people did you duplicate?”
“Enough.”
Daniel turned.
“Through surgery? Records? Conditioning?”
Cross did not answer.
The archive continued releasing files publicly.
Notifications filled the screen.
Journalists.
Federal agencies.
Medical boards.
Evidence copies multiplying beyond control.
Cross’s empire was opening.
But Evelyn still had Lily.
The van feed shifted.
Outside the window, a road sign passed.
Daniel paused the image.
“Route 19.”
The second Sarah searched.
“Northbound.”
Laura looked at Henry.
“Where would she take a child north?”
Henry hesitated.
Cross looked at him.
The old command returned.
“Say nothing.”
Henry stared at Cross.
Then at Lily.
For the first time, his face held something like guilt.
“Cross Harbor has a private airfield.”
Daniel sent the location.
The security guards finally broke through the hospital door.
Cross did not resist when they entered.
He looked at me.
“You think releasing records creates justice?”
“No.”
“What does?”
“Witnesses who stay alive.”
The guards restrained him.
Henry raised his hands before they reached him.
Laura watched.
“You surrender now?”
He looked at the live feed.
“I know the airfield gate code.”
Daniel moved closer.
“Tell me.”
Henry looked at me.
“If I do, you let me speak to Lily.”
“No.”
His face tightened.
“She knows me.”
“You helped steal her.”
“I protected her from Evelyn.”
“You visited once a year.”
“I was the only person who told her you existed.”
That stopped me.
Lily had asked if I remembered the song.
Henry may have lied, manipulated, and participated.
But somewhere inside the system, he told my daughter my name.
“Why?”
He looked away.
“Because she asked why she looked like the woman in my wallet.”
I stared.
“You carried my photograph?”
“I forgot it was there.”
Another lie.
Maybe not.
Abusers are not empty every second.
That never excuses what they do.
It only makes truth harder.
The van feed flickered.
Lily moved her hands subtly.
One finger.
Pause.
Nine.
Pause.
Four.
Daniel noticed.
“She’s signaling numbers.”
The second Sarah wrote them down.
1-9-4-7.
Henry looked up.
“That’s the airfield emergency code.”
Lily knew the code.
She had been taught.
Or she had listened.
The feed shook violently.
The van slowed.
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“What are you doing?”
Lily pulled at the seat strap.
The fake Kathleen grabbed her wrist.
Lily kicked the van wall.
A loud alarm sounded.
The side door began opening while the vehicle still moved.
I sat up despite the pain.
“Lily!”
She looked into the camera.
“Mom, don’t let Henry come.”
Then the feed cut to black.
Henry went completely pale.
“She knows.”
I looked at him.
“Knows what?”
His mouth trembled.
