Chapter 14 - The Real Henry Was in the Tunnel

Lily’s breathing echoed through the phone.
“Stay where you are,” I said.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“He says they’re coming.”
A man’s voice sounded faintly behind her.
Older.
Weak.
“Tell Amy the east tunnel.”
The restrained Henry stared at my phone.
Daniel noticed.
“You know that voice.”
Henry nodded slowly.
“My father.”
Cross laughed once from the guards’ custody.
“Not biologically.”
Henry looked at him with hatred.
I spoke into the phone.
“Lily, who is the man?”
“He says his name is Henry Carter.”
My mother gripped the side of the bed.
Michael Carter had been my father’s name.
Henry Carter had become my husband’s.
The name was not coincidence.
It was inherited.
A role passed through men connected to our family.
Daniel looked at Cross.
“Henry I.”
Cross said nothing.
Laura answered.
“The first operative married women connected to Elias Mercer’s investigation.”
My mother went pale.
“My mother.”
Kathleen’s mother had died when Kathleen was twelve.
A household accident.
Gas leak.
Her husband’s name in old records had been Henry Carter.
The first Henry.
My husband was Henry IV.
The man in the tunnel might be Henry III.
The one who trained him.
I looked at the restrained man.
“Who raised you?”
He looked at the floor.
“Henry Carter.”
“Your father?”
“That’s what I believed.”
Cross smiled.
“Belief made the role stable.”
The elevator doors opened.
A medical transport team waited.
Daniel moved us inside.
Laura, my mother, the nurse, and the second Sarah joined.
Henry remained between two guards.
Cross was taken separately.
I stayed on the phone with Lily.
“Can you see an exit?”
“Red lights. A metal door.”
The older man behind her coughed.
“Tell Daniel the Mercer symbol opens it.”
Daniel heard.
“What symbol?”
Lily described it.
“A bird over waves.”
The same emblem on her backpack.
My mother whispered, “Our family crest.”
Daniel searched the archive map.
An east tunnel appeared beneath the Mercer center.
“It leads to an old service road.”
“How far are they?” I asked.
“Three minutes from the exit.”
Lily breathed faster.
Then a metallic crash sounded.
The older man shouted.
The phone fell.
I heard Evelyn.
“Lily.”
The call stayed connected.
Footsteps.
The girl running.
The older man struggling.
A sharp impact.
Then silence.
“Lily?”
No answer.
The transport van moved through traffic with emergency lights flashing.
Daniel tracked the phone.
The signal moved north.
“She’s running.”
Henry looked at the map.
“She will reach a split.”
“How do you know?”
“I trained there.”
Laura looked at him.
“To do what?”
He did not answer.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“What happens at the split?”
Henry looked at me.
“One tunnel exits.”
“And the other?”
“Leads to the conditioning rooms.”
I felt sick.
“Which one will Lily choose?”
“The one marked safe.”
“That sounds right.”
“It’s the trap.”
Daniel spoke into the phone.
“Lily, if you hear me, do not follow the green signs. Take the unmarked tunnel.”
A small breath came through.
She had the phone again.
“Okay.”
Evelyn’s voice sounded behind her.
The signal accelerated.
The van turned onto a narrow road.
The Mercer center appeared through the windshield.
Abandoned brick buildings.
Boarded windows.
A rusted sign.
But fresh tire marks crossed the mud.
The transport stopped.
Daniel and the security team moved first.
The nurse stayed with me.
I refused.
They transferred me into a wheelchair, secured my cast, and pushed me toward the east entrance.
My ribs burned with every bump.
My mother stayed beside me.
Laura followed.
Henry remained restrained but guided them to a hidden door behind an old laundry building.
He entered a code.
The same numbers Lily signaled.
The door opened.
Cold air came from below.
We descended by service lift.
At the bottom, red emergency lights pulsed along a concrete tunnel.
A child’s shoe lay near the wall.
Red.
I reached for it.
Lily’s.
Then a man crawled from the darkness.
Gray-haired.
Bleeding from one shoulder.
Henry III.
He looked at my husband.
“You were never supposed to bring her here.”
My husband stared at him.
“You told me my mother died.”
The older man laughed weakly.
“You had three.”
Daniel knelt beside him.
“Where is Lily?”
“Evelyn took the trap route.”
Henry IV closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
“You knew.”
“I hoped she wouldn’t.”
The older Henry grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.
“Do not open the conditioning room.”
“Why?”
“Because Cross built it to copy Amy.”
The tunnel lights turned white.
A door ahead opened automatically.
Inside stood Lily.
Unharmed.
Beside her was a hospital bed.
A woman lay beneath the blanket.
Same light brown hair as mine.
Same bruises.
Same pale blue hospital gown.
Her eyes opened.
She looked at me.
“I’m Amy Carter.”
Lily backed away from her.
Then Evelyn’s voice came through the ceiling.
May you like
“One of you leaves with the child.”
