Chapter 13 - Henry Was There When Lily Was Born

I looked at Henry.

“You were twenty-three.”

He nodded.

“How were you in the operating room?”

Cross answered from beside the guards.

“He was an orderly.”

Henry closed his eyes.

The pieces aligned.

Before the business suits.

Before the company.

Before he met me.

Henry worked in the hospital.

Evelyn recruited him there.

I felt numb.

“You carried her out.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

My mother sobbed.

Daniel stepped toward him.

Henry did not back away.

“I was told the baby had to be moved because Cross’s enemies would kill her.”

“You believed that?”

“I believed what I needed to believe.”

“What did you do to me?”

He looked at the floor.

“You woke up.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“I remember a song.”

“You held her.”

“For how long?”

“Less than a minute.”

I closed my eyes.

The dream.

A warm weight against my chest.

Tiny fingers.

My own voice singing.

Then a shadow leaning over me.

Henry.

“You took her from my arms.”

“Yes.”

My heart monitor accelerated.

The nurse moved closer.

“Mrs. Carter, breathe slowly.”

I ignored her.

“Did she cry?”

Henry’s face broke.

“Yes.”

“Did you look at her?”

“Yes.”

“And eleven years later you married me?”

“Fourteen years ago.”

I stared.

He had met me before our official meeting.

He had seen me unconscious.

He had stolen my child.

Then three years later, he entered my life under another name and pretended not to know me.

“You targeted me from the beginning.”

“Yes.”

Laura closed her eyes.

Daniel turned away before he lost control.

The guards tightened their grip on Cross.

I asked Henry the only question that mattered.

“Why did Lily say not to let you come?”

He looked at Cross.

Cross said, “Because he was assigned to relocate her again.”

Henry shook his head.

“No.”

“You accepted the order.”

“I accepted access.”

“You entered the youth home yesterday.”

Henry’s silence confirmed it.

I looked at him.

“You were going to move her.”

“I was going to get her out.”

“To where?”

“A safe house.”

“Evelyn’s?”

“No.”

“Yours?”

“Yes.”

Laura laughed bitterly.

“You thought stealing the child a second time would make you her father.”

Henry looked at her.

“I was the only person who visited.”

“You were also the man who took her.”

His face collapsed.

The second Sarah checked her phone.

“Emergency teams are approaching the airfield.”

Daniel looked at me.

“We need to move you.”

I shook my head.

“My leg is broken.”

“We have transport.”

“I am not staying here.”

The nurse stepped forward.

“You cannot travel safely.”

I looked at her.

“My daughter is in a moving van.”

She understood.

The hospital bed wheels unlocked.

The nurse began securing my cast and IV.

Daniel looked at the guards.

“Take Cross separately.”

Cross smiled.

“You still believe the airfield is the destination.”

Daniel stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“The van is a diversion.”

Henry looked at him.

“No.”

Cross continued.

“Evelyn never uses the same exit twice.”

Henry stepped closer.

“Where is she going?”

Cross looked at me.

“Contain the archive and I tell you.”

I almost laughed.

“The archive is already public.”

“Only fragments.”

He was right.

The files were releasing in waves.

A full decryption key remained sealed.

Cross still had leverage.

Then Laura lifted her recorder.

“Not anymore.”

She played another clip.

Cross’s voice.

A date from years earlier.

“The full key is the first patient’s name.”

Cross’s expression changed.

Laura smiled.

“You talked too much when you thought I was dying.”

Daniel searched the archive.

FIRST PATIENT.

A blank field.

Laura looked at my mother.

“Who was the first woman Evelyn controlled?”

Kathleen whispered, “Me.”

Daniel entered her name.

Kathleen Carter.

Rejected.

She shook her head.

“That was my married name.”

Her maiden name.

Kathleen Mercer.

Daniel entered it.

The archive unlocked fully.

Cross lost color.

Elias Mercer.

The name connected.

My mother was related to the investigator who built the first case against Cross.

Kathleen looked stunned.

“My brother Elias disappeared when I was young.”

Cross had targeted her because of him.

The archive displayed a map.

Evelyn’s current route appeared.

Not the airfield.

The old Mercer rehabilitation center outside the city.

Laura looked at me.

“That’s where they kept me.”

Daniel moved the bed toward the door.

“We go now.”

Henry stepped forward.

“I know the basement entrance.”

Daniel looked at me.

The choice was mine.

Henry had stolen Lily.

He had abused me.

He had tried to kill me.

He also knew the place holding my daughter.

I looked at the guards.

“Bring him restrained.”

Henry nodded.

He understood.

Not forgiveness.

Usefulness.

As they wheeled me into the hallway, the hospital lights returned to normal.

My mother walked beside me.

Laura followed with her cane.

Daniel stayed close.

Henry came behind us in restraints.

Then my phone rang from the bedside drawer.

The nurse retrieved it.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Lily whispered, “Mom?”

“Lily.”

“I got out of the van.”

Relief nearly stopped my heart.

“Where are you?”

She breathed hard.

“In a tunnel.”

“Are you alone?”

A pause.

“No.”

“Who is with you?”

She whispered, “The real Henry.”

Every person in the hallway stopped.
