Chapter 7 - My Mother Had Two Babies

Daniel stared at his name.
I looked at my mother.
“You had twins?”
Kathleen shook so violently the chair moved beneath her.
“I was told one died.”
Daniel’s face went empty.
“Which one?”
She looked at him.
“You.”
The room fell silent.
My brother stepped back.
“I died?”
“The doctor said the boy had no heartbeat.”
Evelyn’s hands disappeared from the monitor.
The distorted voice became sharper.
“That is enough.”
Daniel moved toward the screen.
“You took me.”
My mother covered her face.
Laura whispered, “She placed him.”
“With Michael?” I asked.
Kathleen nodded through tears.
“Michael came later. He believed Daniel was his.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You never questioned why there was no death certificate?”
“I did. The hospital said the records were sealed.”
The nurse looked sick.
“This facility?”
Kathleen nodded.
The nurse stared at the floor.
Daniel understood.
“This hospital was part of the network.”
The nurse shook her head.
“Not now.”
“Systems survive people.”
Henry laughed softly.
“You’re all finally catching up.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“You knew Amy and I were twins.”
Henry shrugged.
“Eventually.”
“You tried to kill both of us.”
“You were obstacles.”
My mother stood and slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Henry’s head turned.
For one second, nobody moved.
Kathleen’s hand trembled at her side.
“You touched my children.”
Henry slowly looked back at her.
The security door remained locked.
The guards outside could not enter.
He smiled.
Then Daniel stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
Henry’s confidence weakened.
Daniel looked at the nurse.
“Can you draw my blood?”
She understood immediately.
“If the system requires both profiles.”
“We finish the verification before Evelyn can reroute it.”
I stared at him.
“You want to open the trust?”
“Yes.”
“What if that’s what she wants?”
“It already reached seventy-five percent. She has enough of your profile to keep trying.”
Laura nodded.
“We either stop halfway and lose control, or finish first.”
My mother grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“You just came back.”
He looked at her.
“And Amy almost died.”
The nurse prepared a sterile kit.
Daniel rolled up his sleeve.
Henry watched with growing alarm.
That mattered.
“You don’t want him to do this,” I said.
Henry looked away.
I pushed.
“What happens when the trust opens?”
He said nothing.
Laura stepped closer to him.
“Evelyn told you that you would inherit.”
Henry’s jaw tightened.
“She promised you a seat on the foundation board.”
Still nothing.
“She promised to erase Laura’s evidence.”
His eyes flicked.
Laura smiled.
“There.”
Daniel sat beside my bed while the nurse drew his blood.
For the first time since he entered, we were close enough to touch.
I looked at his hand.
Same long fingers as mine.
Same faint curve in the little finger.
Twins.
“You should have come back,” I whispered.
“I know.”
“I hated you.”
“I know.”
“I needed you.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
The nurse inserted the sample into the testing unit.
The progress bar moved.
Second biometric match: confirmed.
Trust verification: 84%.
The hospital lights dimmed.
Evelyn’s voice returned.
“You should have stayed dead, Daniel.”
He looked at the monitor.
“You first.”
A new door icon appeared on the screen.
Archive access pending.
Henry suddenly lunged toward the blood testing unit.
Daniel caught him.
The two men collided with the medical cart.
Trays crashed to the floor.
Henry drove one shoulder forward, trying to reach the sample.
Daniel shifted his weight and forced him sideways.
Henry struck the wall.
Laura hooked her cane behind Henry’s ankle.
He lost balance.
Daniel pinned him to the floor.
The nurse pulled the sample away.
The progress bar reached 90%.
Henry shouted toward the monitor.
“Evelyn, stop it!”
Her voice remained calm now.
“I cannot.”
Henry’s face changed.
“You said you controlled the trust.”
“I control access attempts.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means the archive chooses what opens.”
The screen displayed four sealed files.
PATIENTS.
MARRIAGES.
FOUNDATION.
SUCCESSOR.
Henry stared at the last word.
Laura noticed.
“What is successor?”
No one answered.
The progress bar reached 97%.
Senator Cross’s prerecorded image returned.
“Amy and Daniel, if both of you are alive, then Evelyn failed to erase the family line.”
My mother gripped the bed.
Cross continued.
“The successor file identifies the person legally entitled to control every clinic, trust, and shell foundation in the network.”
Henry stopped struggling.
The screen changed.
Verification complete.
SUCCESSOR FILE UNLOCKED.
A photograph began loading.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not Senator Cross.
A young woman in navy scrubs.
Standing inside my hospital room.
Everyone turned toward the nurse.
Her ID badge displayed the name Sarah Collins.
The screen identified her differently.
Sarah Evelyn Cross.
The nurse backed away.
“I don’t know what that means.”
Then the locked hospital door opened from the outside.
A second woman in identical navy scrubs stood in the hallway.
