Chapter 1 - THE LOCKED ROOM

The ultrasound room door slammed against the wall just as Bradley grabbed my wrist and tried to drag me back into the hallway.

“You don’t belong here!”

His fingers closed over the same bruises he had left three nights earlier.

Pain shot through my arm, but I refused to move.

Across the room, Tiffany sat frozen on the examination bed in a beige maternity dress, one hand resting over her stomach.

Bradley had told me he was attending an emergency business meeting.

Instead, I had found him inside a private prenatal appointment with another pregnant woman.

Dr. William Carter stepped between us.

He drove his forearm firmly into Bradley’s chest and forced him backward.

“Take your hand off her.”

Bradley’s face flushed.

“This is a family matter.”

Dr. Carter looked at my swollen lip.

“No. This is now a medical matter.”

Dr. Lisa Morgan closed the door while the nurse moved toward me with a chair.

I gripped the edge of the examination bed instead.

My breathing shook.

The baby kicked painfully beneath my purple maternity dress.

Tiffany stared at the wedding ring on my finger.

“Husband?” she whispered.

Bradley forced a laugh.

“She’s unstable.”

I pulled our marriage certificate from my purse and dropped it beside the ultrasound machine.

Seven years of marriage.

His signature.

Mine.

Tiffany’s face drained of color.

“You said the divorce was final.”

“It practically is.”

“No papers were ever filed,” I said.

Bradley’s eyes hardened.

He wanted me silent.

I had spent years becoming small whenever he looked at me that way.

Not today.

“You should’ve divorced me before today.”

Dr. Carter picked up Tiffany’s medical chart.

He looked at the ultrasound monitor, then at my bruised face, then back at Bradley.

Something changed in his expression.

His jaw tightened.

“Nobody leaves this room.”

Bradley stepped toward the monitor.

“What are you doing?”

Dr. Carter caught his wrist and shoved it away.

The room went silent.

He slowly turned the screen toward himself and studied one specific detail.

Bradley’s confidence collapsed.

“What’s wrong?”

Dr. Carter did not answer.

Outside the door, a woman began pounding.

“William! Don’t let him leave!”

I knew that voice.

May you like

It belonged to Bradley’s mother.

And she sounded terrified.
