Chapter 17 - THE GRAVE WITHOUT A NAME

The key opened a storage unit outside Richmond.
Federal agents entered first.
Inside were twenty sealed boxes, a hospital refrigerator, and a child’s wooden crib covered by a plastic sheet.
Emily stopped at the doorway.
“I slept there.”
The crib was too small for the woman standing beside me, but her hand touched the rail as if part of her still fit inside it.
Matthew remained close to Ethan.
He had spent nine years underground, yet Emily’s quiet frightened him more than the ward ever had. He understood confinement. He did not understand a childhood built to appear normal while every adult kept changing names.
William opened the refrigerator.
No medical samples.
Only cassette tapes.
Each tape carried a date and a subject number.
CP-00.
CP-01.
CP-02 through CP-30.
One tape was labeled SARAH WALKER — PRIMARY MATERNAL SOURCE.
I had been Sarah Bennett then. Walker was Ethan’s surname.
Samuel had altered the label after deciding Ethan would become part of the family he was designing around me.
Agent Ramirez photographed everything before we played the first recording.
Samuel’s voice filled the storage unit.
“Emily demonstrates memory retention beyond acceptable levels. Unlike Matthew, she resists pharmaceutical suppression. Separation is required.”
A woman asked, “Separate the twins?”
“Yes.”
“Which child stays in the ward?”
“The male. His immune disorder requires monitoring.”
“And the girl?”
“Place her with the Vale unit.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Another tape recorded Dr. Vale arguing with Samuel.
“You used my name without consent.”
“You provided the embryo culture.”
“I did not provide sperm.”
“You provided something more useful.”
William stopped the tape.
“Vale’s DNA could have been introduced through stem-cell manipulation.”
I looked at him.
“You mean he was genetically her father without producing the sample?”
“Potentially. The Carter Protocol was experimenting with induced reproductive cells.”
Emily laughed once.
Not with humor.
“They manufactured my father.”
Ramirez found a map taped beneath the storage desk. A red circle marked a private cemetery in Virginia.
The grave had no stone.
Only a metal plate beneath the soil.
VALE UNIT — TERMINATED.
We obtained a warrant and excavated it before dark.
The coffin contained a body.
The dental records matched Dr. Adrian Vale.
The date of death did not.
The man buried there had died eighteen years earlier.
The Vale convicted at trial was alive in a federal prison hospital.
William stared at the forensic report.
“Then the man we prosecuted is not Adrian Vale.”
Emily showed no surprise.
She looked toward the prison transport road beyond the cemetery.
“I told you Samuel always kept a replacement.”
Before we could contact the prison, Ramirez’s radio sounded.
The inmate registered as Dr. Adrian Vale had attacked a guard, stolen a medical badge, and escaped during transfer.
Security footage showed him leaving through a service gate.
He did not run.
He looked directly into the camera and held up a card.

On it were four words.
