Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN OUTSIDE

Dr. Lisa opened the door only wide enough to see who was standing there.

Margaret Miller pushed past her.

Bradley’s mother was usually polished, cold, and perfectly controlled.

That morning, her gray hair was damp from the rain, her lipstick was smeared, and she was clutching a thick envelope against her chest.

When she saw me, she stopped.

“You brought her here?”

Bradley stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

Margaret looked toward Tiffany, then toward the ultrasound monitor.

Her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Dr. Carter noticed.

“You knew about this pregnancy?”

Margaret swallowed.

“I knew enough.”

Tiffany slid off the examination bed.

“You told me his wife was dangerous.”

Margaret did not look at her.

Bradley reached for the envelope.

“Give me that.”

She pulled it away.

“No.”

His face darkened.

“Mother.”

It was not a request.

It was a warning.

Margaret stepped behind Dr. Carter.

For the first time in seven years, I saw her afraid of her own son.

Dr. Carter pointed toward the chair.

“Sit down.”

Margaret obeyed.

I stared at the envelope.

“What’s inside?”

She looked at me.

“I tried to warn you.”

“When?”

“The calls that disconnected.”

My pulse quickened.

For weeks, I had received calls from blocked numbers.

Every time I answered, someone breathed but never spoke.

Bradley had told me it was spam.

Margaret pressed the envelope against her knees.

“I couldn’t say anything while he was near you.”

Bradley laughed.

“This is ridiculous.”

Dr. Carter turned the ultrasound monitor away from him.

“No, what’s ridiculous is that both women have nearly identical conception dates.”

Tiffany looked at me.

I looked at her.

Dr. Carter continued.

“And both charts list the same fertility specialist.”

Dr. Adrian Vale.

I had never met him.

At least I did not remember meeting him.

Lisa opened my hospital record.

“Sarah, your chart shows three fertility procedures.”

“I never had fertility treatment.”

Bradley’s face went pale.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Dr. Carter looked directly at him.

“Then explain why your signature authorized all three.”

Bradley backed toward the door.

The nurse blocked it.

Margaret finally opened the envelope.

Inside were medical bills, consent forms, and a photograph of me unconscious in a clinic bed.

Standing beside me was Bradley.

And beside him was Dr. Vale.
