Chapter 20 - THE HEART THAT HELD THE RECORDS

William operated in the abandoned annex because moving Grace would have killed her.
Lisa arrived by helicopter with a federal surgical team. Mercer stood under guard beside the monitor, giving instructions only when Ramirez threatened to let him watch the data die with her.
I stayed near Grace’s head.
She looked at me through the oxygen mask.
“You used to bite your nails when you were scared.”
I looked at my hands.
Blood marked the skin beside my thumb.
“I still do.”
She smiled faintly.
A memory flashed.
Two girls sitting on a bathroom floor.
Grace painting my nails purple so I would stop biting them before Ethan returned from deployment.
Then it disappeared.
I began crying.
“I remember the nail polish.”
Grace’s eyes filled.
“That’s enough for now.”
Emily stood on the opposite side holding her hand. Matthew watched the surgical monitors with the rigid focus of someone who believed losing attention could cause death.
William located the capsule beside Grace’s damaged heart.
“It’s connected to the sinoatrial node.”
Mercer gave instructions.
Lisa looked at him.
“If you are lying, she dies.”
“If I wanted her dead, I had eighteen years.”
Grace heard him.
“You wanted me useful.”
Mercer lowered his eyes.
William clamped the lead.
Grace’s heart stopped.
The room became a single tone.
Emily screamed.
Lisa began internal massage while William removed the capsule and placed it inside a shielded evidence container.
One shock.
No rhythm.
Second shock.
Grace’s body lifted.
Still nothing.
I pressed my forehead against hers.
“You found me,” I whispered. “You don’t get to leave before I remember you.”
Third shock.
The monitor flickered.
One beat.
Then another.
Emily collapsed against Matthew.
Grace survived.
The capsule survived too.
Inside were treatment logs, adoption transfers, embryo records, and recordings naming forty-seven children still living under Carter Protocol identities.
One file was different.
CP-00 TERMINATION AUTHORITY.
It carried William Carter’s digital signature.
William stared at it.
“I never authorized this.”
Mercer laughed from the wall.
“Samuel built you to inherit him.”
William’s signature had been embedded into the system before he became a doctor. The protocol could issue orders in his name without his knowledge.
The discovery threatened every medical license, consent form, and patient record William had touched.
Then Lisa found the authentication source.
The orders were still being generated from an active server.
Not Samuel’s prison.
Not Mercer’s annex.
From William’s new clinic for reproductive-abuse victims.

Someone inside the clinic had reopened the Carter Protocol.
And the target scheduled for termination that night was Tiffany’s daughter, Hope.
