Chapter 11 - WHY SUSAN NEEDED MY FATHER TO STAY

Dad remembered another conversation.

Susan thought he was asleep.

He heard her whisper to Kyle in the hallway.

“If he changes his mind before recording, we’re finished.”

Kyle answered:

“Just keep him here.”

At the time, Dad thought they meant his travel plans.

Now we understood.

The Nebraska deed had not yet been recorded.

If Dad contacted his own lawyer or county office before filing, the fraud risk increased.

Susan needed him quiet until recording.

They took his phone.

His wallet.

Kept telling him I was in trouble.

Then gave him chores.

“Why were you cleaning?” I asked.

Dad looked embarrassed.

“I asked if I could help with anything.”

“That doesn’t explain the food.”

“Susan said if I wanted to stay under her son’s roof, I could make myself useful.”

“My roof.”

Dad almost smiled.

“I didn’t think correcting her would help.”

The humiliation escalated over two days.

Dishes.

Patio sweeping.

Groceries.

Then the kitchen mess.

Heather brought breakfast supplies.

Susan deliberately knocked one container off the island.

Dad tried to clean it.

Then she kicked the basket when I walked in.

“You think she saw me?”

“I heard your suitcase outside before she kicked it.”

That stopped me.

Susan may have known I was entering.

Why humiliate him more at that moment?

Maybe she wanted a confrontation.

Maybe anger could be used against me.

Susan’s police report suddenly looked less spontaneous.

Rebecca asked whether Dad had seen any camera in the living room.

No.

But our doorbell camera captured sound near the entry.

I had forgotten it existed.

The device stored seven days.

We preserved the clip.

My suitcase wheels rolled toward the door.

Inside, Susan’s voice:

“She’ll understand eventually.”

Heather:

“What if she doesn’t?”

Susan:

“Then Kyle handles her.”

Then the basket scraped.

My key entered the lock.

Susan said:

“Norman, clean that.”

The door opened.

She kicked.

The scene had been created seconds before I entered.

Not the entire conflict.

But the final humiliation.

Why?

Rebecca had a theory.

“Provocation.”

Susan knew I was furious about anyone disrespecting Dad.

She may have wanted me to explode.

I did.

My assault gave Kyle leverage in the separation.

It helped paint me as unstable.

It made Susan a victim publicly.

Was that the plan from the start?

We could not prove it yet.

Then Heather called Dad again.

This time she sounded worse.

“Mom knew Chloe was coming.”

“How?”

“Kyle tracks the home security alerts.”

My flight had landed early.

The garage app notified Kyle when my car service entered the gate.

He texted Susan.

CHLOE IS HOME EARLY.

Heather had seen it.

“What did your mother do?” Dad asked.

“She said, ‘Then we make sure Chloe looks crazy before Kyle gets here.’”

My stomach turned.

Heather admitted she laughed because she was nervous.

Not a flattering defense.

But it was a crack.

The food basket had not merely been cruelty.

It had been bait.

I had taken it.

📖 Doorbell audio and Heather’s admission showed Susan deliberately provoked Chloe seconds before she entered, helping Kyle build an “unstable wife” narrative for his planned separation. 👇
