Kyle believed the black drive mattered because it held local copies.
He forgot my profession.
Project directors are paranoid about version control.
Years earlier, I convinced Kyle to use a cloud backup service after his laptop died during a presentation.
He mocked me for paying for redundancy.
Now Rebecca subpoenaed the provider.
Bennett Development Partners had canceled its subscription three weeks earlier.
Too late.
Retention kept snapshots for sixty days.
The black drive was missing.
Its backup was not.
Kyle’s attorneys fought access.
The judge allowed targeted discovery related to the loan, Sonoran Crest, collateral documents, and ownership transfers.
No fishing expedition.
Fair.
The recovered folder names told a story before the documents did.
NORMAN.
CHLOE AUTH.
FAMILY HOLDINGS.
SEPARATION.
POST-CLOSE.
My stomach tightened at the last one.
We opened only responsive files.
The Norman folder contained scans of his driver’s license.
Farm deed.
Bank statement.
Signature samples.
One file was named NORM_SIG_CLEAN.png.
A cleaned digital image of Dad’s signature.
Heather claimed she did not create it.
Metadata identified Kyle’s user account.
Reward.
Mechanics of the farm forgery.
The Chloe folder contained my old signature scan.
Security-question notes.
A screenshot of my email recovery settings.
Kyle could no longer plausibly claim he thought I had signed.
Then the information twist.
The separation folder was not merely four months old.
Its earliest draft was eleven months old.
Almost a year.
Kyle had been considering leaving long before Sonoran Crest reached crisis.
Why?
A file named PROPERTY STRATEGY answered part of it.
My Scottsdale house had appreciated sharply.
Kyle had no title interest.
Our prenup kept pre-marital property separate.
He could not claim half automatically.
But if a joint or business-related lien attached and survived separation, my equity would become entangled in debt.
Martin’s notes stated:
Leverage for global settlement if collateral remains outstanding.
I stared.
“Leverage.”
Rebecca nodded.
“If the lien remained enforceable, Kyle could use the debt dispute to pressure settlement terms.”
So even if Sonoran Crest recovered and repaid everything, the existence of the lien gave him leverage during separation.
The scheme had two purposes.
Save his project.
Strengthen his position against me.
Then we opened POST-CLOSE.
A timeline.
Day 0: Funding.
Day 1: Norman returns Nebraska.
Day 3: Chloe returns.
Day 5: Separation filing.
Day 10: Family Holdings restructuring.
I had come home on Day 1.
Four days early.
Everything after that had been disrupted.
