Chapter 20 - KYLE’S OFFER

Kyle wanted mediation.
I almost refused.
Rebecca told me to listen.
Not agree.
Listen.
Kyle sat across from me in a private conference room.
No Susan.
No Heather.
Just attorneys.
He looked tired.
Older.
For one dangerous second, he looked like the man I had loved.
“I can fix this,” he said.
Rebecca said nothing.
Neither did I.
“I have an investor interested in Sonoran Crest.”
“Signed?”
“No.”
“Then you don’t have an investor.”
His mouth tightened.
Project language.
My language.
That was why he hid the problem from me.
Kyle offered to transfer all his Bennett Development ownership to me if I stopped cooperating with criminal investigators and agreed to restructure the Mesa Crest debt.
I stared.
“You want me to own the company that created the problem.”
“It has upside.”
“So did Sonoran Crest before you nearly lost everything.”
He leaned forward.
“You think Rebecca is going to make the loan disappear?”
“No.”
“She can’t.”
“I know.”
“Then we need a business solution.”
That sentence explained our marriage.
Every moral problem became financial architecture to Kyle.
“Did you forge my signature?”
His attorney interrupted.
Kyle did not answer.
“Did you tell Dad I was detained?”
Silence.
“Did you take his phone?”
“Yes.”
One admission.
“Did you tell Susan to provoke me?”
“I told her to document your behavior.”
“Did you plan our separation before the loan?”
His face changed.
“Yes.”
There.
Not every element.
Enough.
“Why didn’t you just leave?”
“Because everything was connected.”
“To money.”
“To our life.”
“No. To your company.”
He looked angry.
“You think I didn’t build anything for us?”
“I think you decided what ‘us’ meant without asking me.”
He leaned back.
Then he said the thing that finally ended something inside me.
“If you had known Sonoran Crest was in trouble, you would have forced me to sell.”
“Yes.”
“Exactly.”
He saw that as justification.
I saw it as proof.
Kyle did not deceive me because he did not know what I would do.
He deceived me because he knew.
The mediation failed.
But afterward, his attorney sent a limited formal admission.
Kyle acknowledged he misrepresented my professional situation to Norman.
He acknowledged using Norman’s phone to communicate with Mesa Crest.
He denied forging signatures.
He blamed document preparation on administrative staff.
Heather.
Susan.
Maybe Martin.
The family cracked wider.
Heather’s attorney immediately produced text messages.
Kyle to Heather:
Use Dad’s farm sig from lease file if recorder rejects wet scan.
Dad.
He called Norman Dad when manipulating Heather.
The message directly connected Kyle to the forged signature image.
Then Martin Keane withdrew as Kyle’s attorney.
Conflict reasons.
Two days later, Martin’s own counsel contacted Rebecca.
He had something to say about the separation documents.

The lawyer who almost convinced me to settle had decided Kyle was becoming too dangerous to protect.
📖 Mediation exposed Kyle’s core justification—he deceived Chloe because he knew she would stop him—and his own texts tied him directly to Norman’s forged farm signature. 👇
