Chapter 3 - THE DEVICE BESIDE MY KIDNEY

The catheter connected to a drug reservoir hidden beneath my surgical dressing.
It was not listed in the operative report.
Dr. Evans removed it during emergency surgery.
Inside was a compound capable of slowly reducing kidney function while mimicking postoperative complications.
If my remaining kidney failed, Richard could declare me medically dependent.
Then he could control my finances, legal decisions, and future treatment.
Why preserve me after throwing me out?
Because my mother’s estate transferred to me at thirty.
Three months away.
If I became incapacitated before my birthday, Richard remained trustee.
My body and inheritance were tied to the same deadline.
Dr. Evans found the reservoir manufacturer.
Whitaker Biomedical.
A company Richard claimed he sold years earlier.
He still controlled it through Evelyn.
Then Detective Hayes searched the mansion.
In the basement medical room, officers found dialysis equipment, surgical instruments, and two patient files.
EMILY — DONOR ONE.
MAYA — DONOR TWO.
Maya had received my kidney.
But Richard planned to remove one of hers later for Daniel.
My sacrifice would keep her alive long enough to become the second source.
The stepsisters had never been rivals in the real plan.
We were consecutive inventory.
Maya broke down when she saw the file.
She said Evelyn told her the family had finally found a cure.
The cure was us.
Then officers found Daniel in a private clinic.
Alive.
Terrified.
He claimed he never asked for my kidney.
Richard told him an anonymous donor had volunteered.
Daniel had spent years believing his mother abandoned him.
Evelyn told Maya her brother died as a child.
The siblings were separated to make each easier to control.
Then Michael contacted Dr. Evans from an unknown location.
He said Richard had placed similar reservoirs in other donors.
At least eleven.
Some were dead.
Some officially lost to follow-up.
Michael possessed the master patient list.
He would surrender it only if the police protected one woman.
My mother.
