Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT FAILURE
The toxin in Maya’s IV came from a medication bag signed by Nurse Caroline Reed.
Caroline vanished before security reached the nursing station.
Her personnel file was false.
She was not a nurse.
She was Daniel’s wife.
Evelyn told the family Daniel had never married.
In reality, Caroline had spent years helping him survive dialysis.
Richard threatened to cut off treatment unless she worked inside the hospital.
She poisoned Maya’s kidney because Richard promised Daniel would receive the organ if Maya’s transplant failed quickly.
Caroline believed she was saving her husband.
She was sacrificing another woman.
When confronted, Daniel refused the plan.
For the first time, he saw what his survival cost.
He called Caroline and told her to surrender.
She did.
Maya’s kidney recovered after emergency treatment.
Then Richard’s attorneys filed an emergency petition declaring both Maya and me mentally unstable from postoperative medication.
If approved, Richard would gain authority over our treatment and estates.
The hearing was scheduled at midnight under a private medical court.
Judge Malcolm Whitaker.
Richard’s brother.
Another family member hidden behind public neutrality.
Rebecca Sloan, my attorney, challenged the hearing in federal court.
The judge suspended it.
Then Malcolm’s chambers burned.
Records disappeared.
A clerk died.
The fire looked accidental.
Michael said it matched previous Whitaker evidence destruction.
Richard remained in custody but still directed people through coded legal messages.
Then the clinical camera captured Evelyn approaching my IV while everyone slept.
She held no syringe.
Only a phone.
The device beside my bed received a remote command.
My heart rate dropped.
The room alarmed.
Security detained her.
Her phone displayed one message:
MIDNIGHT FAILURE CONFIRMED.
Recipient: MAYA WHITAKER.
My stepsister’s name.
