Chapter 5 - THE FIRST TRANSPLANT

Daniel had received a kidney once before.

At sixteen.

Evelyn told him the donor died in an accident.

The donor was Sarah.

My younger sister.

She survived the removal but developed complications.

Richard placed her inside a long-term care facility under another name.

The family used her first.

Then erased her.

Federal agents found Sarah alive in Missouri.

Thirty-six.

Chronically ill.

She believed I knew.

Richard told her I volunteered her.

The sisters had been divided through lies for decades.

Our first video call lasted six minutes.

She asked, “Did you get to keep your kidney?”

“No.”

“Then he did it to you too.”

No accusation after that.

Only recognition.

Sarah identified the gold ring on Michael’s surgical recording.

It belonged to Grandfather, but Richard had given it to a private surgeon named Thomas Vale.

The man in the operating room may not have been Michael.

He may have worn facial prosthetics.

Michael’s warning could have been staged by the same network.

We still did not know whom to trust.

Then the master patient list appeared online anonymously.

Eleven donor names.

Four dead.

Three missing.

Four alive.

My family was only one branch.

Whitaker Health had sold “family compatibility management” to wealthy clients.

Organ trafficking hidden as medical planning.

The hospital board suspended Dr. Evans after Richard’s attorneys accused him of misconduct.

He lost access to my chart.

A new surgeon arrived.

Dr. Thomas Vale.

The man connected to the ring.

He smiled beside my bed.

“Emily, I’m here to protect your remaining kidney.”

Then the clinical camera above my monitor switched off.

Read Chapter 6 to learn why the doctor assigned to save me carried the same ring as the man who betrayed me in surgery.
