Chapter 16 - THE SCAR ABOVE HER EYE

I finally understood Mara’s scar.
Not simply how she got it.
Why she kept touching it whenever anyone said my family could be trusted.
It was a physical reminder of the day Grant stood between us.
Leah obtained the old building-security incident report.
Mara had been marked “agitated.”
The guard wrote that she attempted unauthorized entry.
Grant’s handwritten note below it read:
Per EW instruction, subject denied all future access.
EW.
Eleanor Whitaker.
No ambiguity.
My mother had personally authorized Mara’s exclusion.
I brought the report to Mara.
She read it without speaking.
“Does it help?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“Does it make it worse?”
“Yes.”
We were learning that both things could be true.
The boys were beginning to ask questions.
Milo led the interrogation.
“Are you our real dad?”
Mara and I had agreed on language with a family therapist.
“I’m your biological father,” I said.
“What’s biological?”
“It means part of how your body began came from me.”
Mason frowned.
“Like ingredients?”
Mara laughed unexpectedly.
“Kind of.”
Max stared at me.
“Then where were you?”
There was no child-sized version of seven years of fraud.
So I gave him the part he deserved.
“I didn’t know where you were. And people kept your mom and me from finding each other.”
Micah asked the hardest question.
“Did you want us?”
My throat closed.
“I didn’t know you existed.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Six years old.
Absolutely merciless.
“Yes,” I said. “If I had known, I would have wanted to know you.”
Mara watched me carefully.
Afterward she said, “Thank you for not promising you would’ve been perfect.”
“I wouldn’t have been.”
“No.”
“I probably would’ve tried to control everything.”
Her mouth tilted.
“You still try.”
“Working on it.”
For the first time, we smiled at each other without history immediately punishing us.
Then Leah called.
The server-vendor issue had moved.
A judge granted limited inspection of the backup tapes because attempted destruction created preservation concerns.
We found Grant’s emails.
Not all of them.
One folder had been corrupted.
But one intact message from March twenty-second carried the subject:
Bennett access.
Grant to Eleanor:
She came again. I turned her away. Adrian is upstairs and still unaware.
Eleanor replied three minutes later:
Keep it that way until Martin fixes V3.
There it was.
Direct knowledge.
Direct instruction.
Direct financial motive.
But the twist came in Grant’s next reply:
This is no longer defensible if the pregnancy is his.
He had objected.
Not enough to stop.
But enough to prove Eleanor had pushed farther than even her lawyer initially wanted.
Then her answer:
You are being paid to make it defensible.
Mara stared at the screen.
“He knew it was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“And did it anyway.”
“Yes.”
The mystery was no longer whether Eleanor had controlled the separation.

The question was how much Grant would admit when protecting her stopped protecting himself.
📖 An archived email finally showed Eleanor ordering Grant to keep Adrian ignorant, while Grant’s own objection proved he knew the scheme had crossed a legal line. 👇
