Chapter 5 - A SIGNATURE WITH THE WRONG DATE

I did not touch the settlement.
“Give me a copy.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because it is privileged.”
“It concerns me.”
“It concerns a dispute that was resolved.”
“It concerns four children.”
Her eyes chilled.
“You don’t know that.”
“You knew they existed.”
“I knew Mara said they existed.”
“She gave birth to quadruplets.”
“That proves childbirth.”
I almost admired the discipline required to say something so cruelly technical.
Almost.
“Why did you approve three hundred thousand dollars to Grant’s brother?”
She leaned back.
“Ask Grant.”
“I’m asking you.”
“I approved hundreds of transactions through the family office.”
“Not from my personal account.”
That landed.
She looked toward the window.
I photographed the settlement before she could stop me.
“Adrian.”
“Call your lawyer.”
“You think Leah Mercer will save you from embarrassing yourself?”
I paused.
I had never told her Leah was representing me.
My mother saw her own mistake a second too late.
“How do you know I hired Leah?”
No answer.
“My phone.”
“Don’t be melodramatic.”
“Grant’s department manages it.”
“Then perhaps you should have chosen a less predictable attorney.”
I left without another word.
Leah was waiting downstairs.
“You were right,” I said.
“I usually charge for hearing that.”
I showed her the photograph.
She enlarged the notarization block.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“The agreement says Mara signed it on March fourteenth.”
“So?”
“When were the children born?”
“November eighteenth.”
Leah calculated.
“Were they premature?”
“Thirty-one weeks.”
She looked up.
“If conception was around February, she would have been newly pregnant in March. The document refers to ‘medical confirmation of a multiple gestation.’ Quadruplets are not always identified that early, depending on timing.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
She zoomed further.
“But this might be.”
The notary was Susan Keene.
A quick licensing search showed Susan’s commission had expired February twenty-eighth that year and was renewed April second.
On March fourteenth, she had not possessed an active commission.
“That doesn’t prove Mara didn’t sign,” I said.
“No. It proves the notarization is defective and possibly fabricated.”
We sent the image to a forensic document examiner.
Then I contacted Mara.
She agreed to meet Leah, not me.
Fair.
At four, she entered Leah’s office carrying a grocery tote because she had come straight from work.
Leah showed her the settlement.
Mara read two paragraphs.
Then laughed.
“What?”
She pointed to the signature.
“That isn’t mine.”
“It resembles it.”
“It resembles the way I signed my name before high school.”
Leah leaned forward.
“What do you mean?”
“I stopped using the looped B in Bennett when I was nineteen.”
“Do you have known signatures from that period?”
“Tax returns. Lease. Hospital forms.”
Reward.
We had comparison samples.
Then Mara pointed to the date.
“March fourteenth?”
“Yes.”
“I was in a hospital that day.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“I was bleeding.”
I felt the room narrow.
“The pregnancy?”
“Yes.”
“I spent three days under observation.”
Leah immediately raised a hand.
“You do not need to disclose medical information unless you want to.”
“I want to.”
Mara looked at me.
“Because while this paper says I was signing away claims, I was lying in Mount Sinai terrified I was losing all four babies.”
The document examiner called before we left.
Preliminary opinion only.
But the signature showed signs of tracing.
More importantly, the ink used in the signature and the ink used in the body had been manufactured in different years.
The signature ink formula had not been commercially released until almost two years after the date printed on the agreement.
The settlement had not merely been notarized incorrectly.
At least one part of it had been created later and backdated.
My mother had kept a forged agreement in her private drawer for seven years.

And when she handed it to me, she had expected me to believe it.
📖 Mara’s hospital records and the document examiner exposed the settlement as backdated, turning Eleanor’s strongest defense into evidence of a deliberate fabrication. 👇
