Chapter 9 - THE STORY THAT HIT THE INTERNET

The article appeared at 6:13 the next morning.
BILLIONAIRE EXECUTIVE TARGETED BY FORMER WAITRESS WITH FOUR “SECRET SONS.”
Mara called me before I reached the third paragraph.
“Tell me you didn’t do this.”
“I didn’t.”
The article knew too much.
Her workplace.
The boys’ ages.
The disputed settlement.
My canceled proposal dinner.
Even the three-hundred-thousand-dollar figure.
“Someone leaked confidential documents,” Leah said.
Mara’s manager called ten minutes later.
She was suspended pending “media stabilization.”
By eight, photographers were outside the restaurant.
By nine, someone had posted the boys’ school district online.
That crossed a line inside me that nothing else had touched.
“We move them,” I said.
Mara glared.
“You don’t get to move my children.”
“I mean somewhere safe, chosen by you.”
“I’m not taking them to one of your penthouses.”
“Then a hotel under Leah’s name.”
“No.”
“Mara—”
“They have school.”
“They have strangers searching for them.”
That stopped her.
Leah intervened.
“Temporary relocation is reasonable. Mara chooses the location. Adrian does not receive the address unless she approves.”
I nodded immediately.
Mara studied me, then agreed.
By noon the boys were staying with Mara’s sister Beth outside Manhattan.
I did not ask where.
That mattered.
Trust was being rebuilt through things I did not demand.
Evan traced the article’s documents.
One image contained invisible document-tracking data from a public-relations vendor.
Sloane Mercer Communications.
Eleanor’s crisis firm.
Reward.
The leak came from her orbit.
But then the investigator found something that made me feel sick.
The proposal detail had not been in any company document.
Only Celeste, my assistant, the restaurant coordinator, and I knew I had planned to propose.
My assistant denied speaking to Eleanor.
The restaurant coordinator had been instructed through Celeste’s account.
I called Celeste.
She arrived at Leah’s office angry before I could ask.
“You think I leaked it.”
“I think someone used information you had.”
“That is not the same sentence.”
“No.”
She placed her phone on the table.
“Take it.”
“Forensics?”
“Yes.”
The analysis took two hours.
Celeste had not contacted the press firm.
But someone had logged into her shared event-planning application using a device registered to Whitaker Family Office.
An invitation containing the word “proposal” had been exported three days before dinner.
Celeste went pale.
“I gave Eleanor’s assistant access to help with flowers.”
“Hannah Cole?” I asked.
“Yes.”
Hannah had worked for my mother for fourteen years.
Another longtime trusted employee.
But the login records contained a surprise.
Hannah’s credentials were used.
Her computer was not.
The device belonged to Grant.
Mara rubbed her temples.
“So Grant leaked the engagement too?”
“Or he used Hannah’s password,” Leah said.
The distinction mattered.
Then Celeste scrolled through her messages.
“There.”
A text from Hannah two weeks earlier.
Mrs. Whitaker wants Beaumont confirmed because the room must be arranged carefully.
Beaumont.
My mother had known exactly where I would be.
She had known Mara worked there.
The private investigator had been monitoring Mara for years.
My supposedly romantic proposal location had been selected through recommendations Eleanor had quietly encouraged Celeste to consider.
The restroom encounter might still have been chance.
But my presence in Mara’s restaurant was not.

Someone had intentionally brought our worlds within the same building.
📖 The smear campaign traced back to Eleanor’s crisis firm, while Grant’s device revealed someone had manipulated Adrian’s proposal plans before the restroom encounter ever happened. 👇
