Chapter 1 - The Locked Cellar

Harper’s tiny hands caught my coat sleeve before I reached the center of the foyer.
“UNCLE DOMINIC… MOMMY IS NEVER COMING BACK.”
I stopped so hard my heel scraped across the marble.
Harper Carter stood barefoot beneath the chandelier in a wrinkled yellow nightgown, her light-brown hair tangled around a face swollen from crying. She was only fourteen months old. Too young to explain anything cleanly.
But she knew how to be afraid.
I crouched.
“Where’s your mother?”
Before Harper could answer, Claire appeared from the hallway.
“My God, Dominic, she’s exhausted.”
Claire reached toward her.
I blocked her hand.
“Her mother has already left,” Claire said sharply.
Harper shook her head and grabbed my lapel.
“Mommy wouldn’t leave me!”
Claire stepped again.
I stood, moved Harper behind me, and shoved Claire back when she tried to pass. She stumbled against the foyer table, catching herself with both hands.
Harper pointed toward the basement staircase.
“I can hear Mommy knocking on the door.”
Everything inside me went still.
Mia Carter had vanished thirty-six hours earlier.
Claire told me Mia packed a suitcase, abandoned Harper, and disappeared after an argument.
I hadn’t believed it.
But Mia was my late brother’s widow, not my employee, not one of my men. She had every legal right to leave my property without telling me.
Leaving Harper was the part that made no sense.
I took Harper’s hand.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Don’t open that door!”
I tore free.
At the bottom of the staircase stood the steel cellar door.
A brass padlock hung from it.
New.
I owned this mansion.
I had never authorized that lock.
Harper suddenly dropped beside a cabinet.
She reached underneath.
When she pulled her hand back, a silver bird pendant lay in her palm.
“It’s Mommy’s.”
I knew the pendant.
My brother gave it to Mia when Harper was born.
Claire saw it.
The color drained from her face.
Harper sobbed.
“Mommy was wearing it when she was down there.”
I turned toward Claire.
She backed away.
My right hand closed around the pendant.
With my left, I reached toward the padlock.
Then I heard it.
Three faint impacts from behind the steel.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Claire whispered my name.
I looked at her.
She wasn’t watching me anymore.

She was staring at the door like she already knew what was on the other side.
📖 The knocking told me someone was behind my cellar door, but Claire’s terror suggested opening it would expose far more than Mia’s disappearance. 👇
