Chapter 21 - Why Mia Didn’t Trust Me

I deserved part of it.
That was the hardest conclusion.
Mia had watched me protect Victor for years.
Defend him at family meetings.
Dismiss questions about foundation accounting as administrative noise.
She had seen me shut down Adrian when he once hinted that “old loyalties” were costing us money.
I had forgotten the conversation.
She hadn’t.
In her formal statement, portions of which were later disclosed through proper channels, Mia wrote:
Dominic does not knowingly participate, but he protects people longer than evidence justifies because betrayal feels personal to him.
Accurate.
Painfully.
She feared that if she told me too early, I would confront Victor.
Victor would destroy records.
Or disappear.
Or use Harper.
So Mia chose external authorities.
That wounded my pride.
It may have saved her life.
Then Keene explained that Mia entered protective housing voluntarily while investigators built cases around Northstar, Victor, and related financial conduct.
Why eight months?
Because the case expanded.
Because compromised witnesses contradicted one another.
Because Mia herself had participated in removing certain confidential records and could not simply be treated as an untouchable victim.
Reality again.
She had copied files.
Moved evidence.
Used false reservations.
Some actions were understandable.
Still required examination.
Harper’s custody complicated everything.
Mia wanted her child.
But revealing herself too soon could expose the investigation and create safety concerns.
Professionals arranged limited protected communication.
Then Keene asked:
“Would Harper recognize Mia’s voice?”
I nearly laughed.
“Of course.”
A supervised audio call was arranged.
No location disclosed.
No camera initially.
Harper sat in my lap.
The line connected.
Silence.
Then Mia:
“Harper?”
My niece froze.
Her mouth opened.
“Mommy?”
Mia started crying.
So did I.
Harper slapped both hands against the phone.
“Mommy! Mommy!”
I looked away because something inside me couldn’t contain the sound.
Mia spoke softly.
“I love you, baby.”
Harper answered in toddler fragments.
For five minutes, nobody discussed evidence.
Nobody discussed Victor.
Just mother and daughter.
Then Mia asked to speak to me.
I took the phone into another room.
“Dominic.”
“Mia.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For surviving?”
“For not trusting you.”
I sat down.
“You were right not to.”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Victor isn’t the last problem.”
My body tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“He had help inside the protective process.”
That changed everything.
Someone had been leaking information after Mia reached authorities.

Which explained why she still couldn’t return.
📖 Mia was alive, but someone had compromised even her protected location, meaning Victor’s network reached farther than our family ever understood. 👇
