Chapter 18 - The Eighteen Million
Victor denied targeting Harper’s inheritance.
His lawyers called the fiduciary recommendation routine.
Documents told a different story.
Victor prepared the recommendation before Mia vanished.
Five days before.
He anticipated a scenario where Mia could no longer manage Harper’s assets.
That did not prove he planned to make her disappear.
But it showed he was preparing to benefit from the possibility.
Then Claire gave us a message.
Victor:
IF MIA WON’T COOPERATE, SHE CAN’T REMAIN THE GATEKEEPER.
Claire:
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Victor:
DON’T ASK QUESTIONS YOU DON’T WANT ANSWERED.
Claire had saved it.
Why?
“Insurance.”
Everyone around Victor kept insurance against everyone else.
That was how criminal partnerships died.
Claire also revealed Victor asked her to encourage me to petition for temporary guardianship control over Harper’s finances if Mia vanished.
He assumed I would.
I almost had.
My attorneys advised me against touching Harper’s estate until an independent fiduciary was appointed.
That decision now looked crucial.
If I had taken control, Victor could have painted me as financially motivated too.
Worse, he might have gained access through advisors I trusted.
The court appointed an independent guardian ad litem for Harper’s financial interests while Mia remained missing.
Victor’s network lost access.
His attorneys objected.
That objection told everyone exactly how much he cared.
Then investigators traced the $18 million portfolio.
No money had been stolen from Harper.
Yet.
Important distinction.
The threat was preparatory.
But Victor’s planning established another motive to neutralize Mia.
She controlled assets.
She possessed evidence.
She knew Adrian’s secrets.
And she no longer trusted him.
Then something unexpected surfaced from the cabin.
A fingerprint on the exterior camera housing.
Claire’s.
She had claimed she never visited Northstar property.
When confronted, she went silent.
Another lie.
She eventually admitted driving there four days after Mia vanished.
“Why?”
“Victor told me Mia wanted to see Harper.”
I stood.
“You brought Harper there?”
“No.”
That answer came instantly.
“Then why go?”
“To check if Mia was there.”
“Was she?”
“Yes.”
My heart slammed.
Claire had seen Mia alive at the cabin.
“What happened?”
“Mia begged me to bring Harper.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Claire started crying.
“She said Victor was lying to everyone. She said I had to get Harper away from him.”
“And you left?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought Mia was manipulating me.”
I stared at the woman I had planned to marry.
Mia had given Claire one final chance to help.
Claire chose Victor.
Then she whispered:
“She gave me something for Harper.”
From her purse, Claire’s attorney produced a sealed plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a folded letter addressed in Mia’s handwriting:
