Chapter 25 - Claire’s Last Defense

Claire asked to speak as part of a structured legal proceeding.

Not privately.

Mia attended with counsel.

So did I.

Claire looked different without the mansion around her.

Smaller.

Less certain.

She admitted disabling the basement alarm.

Admitted installing the padlock.

Admitted luring Mia downstairs.

Admitted giving Harper medication without medical need.

Admitted frightening Harper deliberately.

Each admission came with qualifiers.

Victor pressured me.

I was scared.

I owed him.

I thought Dominic would protect Mia.

I never intended this.

Mia listened without interrupting.

Then:

“Why did you keep my pendant?”

Claire froze.

The silver bird.

We had never fully explained how it moved from the basement to the foyer cabinet.

Claire looked at her attorney.

Then answered.

When Roman freed Mia, the pendant broke during the argument.

The chain fell.

Claire picked up the bird charm later.

“Why?”

“I thought it proved Mia had been downstairs.”

“Yes.”

Claire swallowed.

“I wanted to hide it.”

She carried it upstairs.

Then Harper woke.

Claire had the pendant in her hand.

Harper recognized it and reached for it.

Claire shoved it under the foyer cabinet when footsteps approached.

That was how Harper found it later.

Simple.

No secret accomplice needed.

The clasp remained downstairs because Claire never noticed it.

Another mystery solved.

Then Mia asked:

“Why were you so terrified when Harper found it?”

“Because Dominic would know you had been downstairs.”

“And?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“And because Victor told me if Dominic found out, he’d destroy all of us.”

I looked at her.

“You believed that?”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe I’d hurt you?”

Claire hesitated.

“No.”

That answer mattered.

Her terror at the cellar wasn’t fear of my violence.

It was fear of exposure.

She had used my reputation as an excuse later.

But in that moment, she feared truth.

Mia leaned forward.

“You could have opened the door.”

Claire started crying.

“I know.”

“You could have brought Harper to me at the cabin.”

“I know.”

“You could have called Dominic.”

“I know.”

Each choice narrowed until there was nowhere left to hide.

Victor manipulated Claire.

Yes.

Claire also chose.

That became the core of her accountability.

Later, her case reached a resolution reflecting the conduct that could be proven, including the confinement and treatment of Harper.

I did not celebrate.

Mia didn’t either.

Outside, she asked me:

“Do you still love her?”

I thought carefully.

“I love the person I thought she was.”

Mia nodded.

“That’s probably harder.”

It was.

Then she handed me the silver bird pendant.

“Keep it for Harper.”

I closed my fingers around it.

This time, it wasn’t evidence anymore.

It was inheritance.

Not money.

May you like

Truth.

📖 Claire’s role was finally clear, Victor’s scheme was collapsing, and only Adrian’s unfinished promise remained before Harper could truly leave the cellar behind. 👇
