Chapter 22 - The Leak
The leak was not a federal conspiracy.
That was my first assumption.
Wrong.
Investigators traced compromised information to a contracted transportation provider used during one relocation.
An employee had accessed passenger names.
He sold information to a private investigator.
That investigator worked for Victor.
Ordinary corruption.
Money.
Weak controls.
Enough to endanger Mia.
She had been relocated again.
Victor knew she was alive.
That explained why he never behaved like a man afraid of a murder charge.
He was trying to find her.
Why?
The evidence she retained.
And Harper.
Victor believed Mia’s testimony alone would be vulnerable because she had copied files improperly.
But if she reunited publicly with Harper and produced Adrian’s documents, his story collapsed emotionally and legally.
He needed her silent.
Not necessarily dead.
Control was enough.
Then investigators uncovered Victor’s final plan.
He had prepared a petition questioning Mia’s fitness as a parent based on her disappearance, use of false identities, and removal of confidential financial records.
He planned to portray her as unstable.
Claire would support it.
I would be encouraged to seek guardianship.
Harper’s assets would then move under independent fiduciary control.
Victor’s associate would manage them.
It was elegant.
Legal structures weaponized through manufactured circumstances.
And I had almost walked into it.
The strongest evidence came from Claire’s recovered messages.
Victor:
DOM WILL FILE ONCE HE THINKS MIA ABANDONED THE CHILD.
Claire:
WHAT IF HE DOESN’T?
Victor:
MAKE HARPER AFRAID ENOUGH THAT HE THINKS SHE NEEDS STABILITY.
I stared at the sentence until my vision blurred.
Claire began crying when confronted.
“He didn’t tell me to hurt her.”
“But you understood the purpose.”
“Yes.”
“Did you frighten Harper intentionally?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
There it was.
No more euphemisms.
She used raised hands.
Harsh grabbing.
Isolation.
Medication to keep her quiet.
Not because Victor explicitly scripted each act.
Because she wanted Harper unstable enough to make me seek legal control.
She turned a toddler’s fear into leverage.
Then Victor’s attorneys informed authorities he wanted to surrender for questioning under negotiated conditions.
Not a confession.
Not immunity.
He knew the evidence was closing.
Before that happened, one more piece arrived from Mia.
A scanned page from Adrian’s archive.
Victor had signed a side agreement giving himself twenty percent of recovered Northstar assets if he helped “resolve succession instability.”
That phrase appeared repeatedly around Harper.
His motives converged:
Money already stolen.
Money he could still collect.
Control over evidence.
Protection from Adrian’s records.
Then authorities moved.
Victor surrendered.
Claire was formally separated from all access to Harper and the mansion under legal orders and agreements appropriate to the investigation.
The danger narrowed.
For the first time, Keene said the words I had waited months to hear.
