Chapter 14 - The Last Favor
I met Evelyn once more.
Michael refused to attend.
She had already signed the no-contact agreement and surrendered every key and authorization connected to Lily.
Her car was listed for sale.
“You’ll get the money back,” she said.
“This isn’t about fourteen thousand dollars.”
“I know.”
“No. You don’t.”
She stared at the tabletop.
I told her what Lily had asked the night before.
Was Grandma trying to make me die?
I had told Lily no.
Not because I knew what was inside Evelyn’s head when she served that cake.
Because an eight-year-old should not have to carry the distinction between someone intending to kill her and someone merely accepting the possibility that she could die.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
I let her cry.
Then I gave her my answer.
I would not ask investigators to stop.
I would not campaign for maximum punishment either.
I would provide truthful information and let the process proceed.
“No more family version of what happened,” I said. “No more version that protects you. No version that protects me. Lily gets the truth.”
Evelyn nodded.
Then she asked the question I had expected.
“Will I ever see her again?”
“I don’t know.”
“Daniel—”
“I mean that literally. I don’t know.”
Any future contact would depend on Lily’s safety, professional advice, Evelyn’s accountability, and eventually Lily’s own wishes.
Not Evelyn’s grief.
Not Rachel’s memory.
Not my guilt.
Evelyn signed the final page.
Outside, her attorney was waiting.
So was Detective Collins.
There were no flashing lights.
No handcuffs in a dramatic hallway.
Collins simply informed Evelyn that prosecutors had approved charges related to child endangerment, evidence tampering, and forgery and that arrangements had been made for her to appear for processing with counsel.
Evelyn looked at me once.
I didn’t rescue her.
I didn’t punish her.

I stepped aside.
And for the first time, she had to walk toward the consequences of her own choices without using one of us as a shield.
