Chapter 3 - The Story Evelyn Had Been Building

Evelyn was removed from Lily’s room.

Not arrested.

Not dramatically dragged away.

Detective Collins explained that finding the injector in Evelyn’s vehicle was serious, but investigators still needed to establish how it got there and what had caused Lily’s reaction.

The hospital drew blood and preserved samples from the dessert Lily had vomited onto her dress before the ambulance arrived.

For the first time, I understood how slowly certainty moved in real life.

By evening, Lily was breathing comfortably without oxygen.

I sat beside her while Collins asked permission to photograph text messages on my phone.

That was when I noticed something I should have noticed months earlier.

Evelyn’s messages formed a pattern.

Daniel, you sound exhausted.

Maybe Lily should stay with me during the week.

You can’t keep leaving jobs whenever the school calls.

Rachel would want stability for her.

None of those messages had seemed threatening alone.

Together, they sounded like documentation.

I checked my email.

There were messages from Evelyn asking me strangely formal questions about my work schedule and Lily’s school absences.

I had answered them casually.

Yes, another late job.

Yes, Lily missed school because of her allergy appointment.

Yes, sometimes I feel like I’m drowning.

I had given Evelyn the sentences she needed to portray me as incapable.

That realization carried its own shame.

I had depended on her because losing Rachel had left holes in our life I couldn’t fill alone.

Evelyn knew where every hole was.

Michael arrived shortly after seven.

He looked terrible.

He didn’t hug his mother.

He didn’t even look toward the room where Collins was interviewing her.

Instead, he handed me his tablet.

“I should’ve told you three weeks ago.”

On the screen was an email chain between Michael and Evelyn.

The subject line was:

LILY — PLACEMENT PLAN.

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Not what she was going to do today.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

May you like

Michael lowered his eyes.

And I realized Evelyn hadn’t built her plan alone.
