Chapter 6 - The Guardian Rachel Chose
The folder contained documents Rachel and I had prepared when Lily was two.
We had discussed what would happen if both of us died.
Rachel wanted Michael as Lily’s backup guardian.
Not Evelyn.
I had forgotten the conversation.
Michael hadn’t.
When I showed him the scanned document, he sat down.
“Mom knew.”
“How?”
“Rachel told her.”
That changed something between us.
Michael had spent days explaining his silence as stupidity and misplaced loyalty.
Now I saw another possibility.
Evelyn had approached him about Lily’s placement because his cooperation mattered.
If I were ever considered unable to care for Lily, Michael was the person Rachel had formally preferred.
Evelyn needed him either compliant or compromised.
By helping with Cedar Grove paperwork, he had become both.
Michael understood it at the same moment I did.
“She used me.”
“You still helped her.”
“I know.”
For once, he didn’t defend himself.
That mattered.
So did what he did next.
He gave Detective Collins written permission to retrieve the storage box from his office and provided his entire email chain with Evelyn.
That choice cost him.
His insurance company immediately placed him on administrative leave after learning he had used workplace resources to research a family member’s potential residential placement.
Michael didn’t blame me.
Evelyn did.
She called from an attorney’s office that evening.
I didn’t answer.
She left a voicemail.
“You’re destroying Rachel’s family because you can’t admit you need help.”
I saved it.
Then Lily asked me whether Grandma was going to jail.
“I don’t know.”
“Is Uncle Michael bad too?”
That answer was harder.
“He made a bad choice.”
She considered that.
“Did he try to hurt me?”
“No.”
“Then why didn’t he tell you?”
I had no answer an eight-year-old deserved.
Later that night, Collins called.
Investigators had located the bakery box from Evelyn’s kitchen trash.
Laboratory testing would take time.
But the bakery confirmed something immediately.
Evelyn had ordered two individual slices of chocolate cake.

And Lily had been the only person served an individual slice.
