Chapter 2 - THE MAN BESIDE ME

I pulled my hand away.
The false Alexander did not resist.
He raised both palms while the two officers near the door reached for their weapons.
“Before anyone fires,” he said, “check their credentials.”
The officers froze.
Their identification cards were genuine.
Their facial scans matched Army records.
But the briefcase showed a second live feed.
The same two officers were unconscious inside the SUV.
Replacements had carried the case into our home.
The entire arrival had been staged.
I moved between my family and the false general.
“Who are you?”
“Someone who needed you activated.”
“That is not an answer.”
He looked almost amused.
“You always did ask the cleanest questions.”
He knew my command habits.
My private phrasing.
Then the basement door shook again.
A weak voice called my name.
Alexander’s real voice.
The replacement officers blocked the hallway.
I shifted my weight.
No weapon visible.
But I still had the knife beside the turkey platter and the secure phone in my hand.
Major Ruiz, one of my former operators, had taught me to weaponize ordinary rooms.
The false general saw the movement.
“Don’t.”
“You came into my family’s home wearing my fiancé’s face.”
“And brought the evidence Washington wanted hidden.”
Margaret stood slowly.
“Emma, listen to him.”
I turned.
My mother knew him.
The false general looked at her.
“Margaret.”
No surprise.
No introduction.
My mother had met him before.
Then the front windows shattered inward.
Not from bullets.
From tactical entry charges.
Real military police flooded the foyer.
The two replacement officers surrendered immediately.
The false Alexander lowered himself to his knees.
His final words before restraint were for me.
“Your family didn’t humiliate you because they thought you were weak.”
A pause.
“They did it because keeping you angry made you easier to steer.”
The basement was opened.
General Hayes was recovered alive.
His first question was whether I had touched the classified folder.
I said no.
He looked relieved.
Inside the folder was not an operation plan.
It was a list of every covert identity connected to the Whitmore family.
My mother’s name appeared at the top.
