Chapter 5 - THE OTHER EMMA

Her name was Claire Bennett.

Thirty-seven.

Former Army intelligence officer.

Surgically altered to resemble me.

Operation Apron created replacement family members in case original subjects resisted.

Claire had trained on my voice, gestures, and career history.

She had already appeared in two remote briefings under my identity while I was deployed.

The program planned to use her if my marriage to Alexander compromised command neutrality.

A replacement colonel could continue my role without personal attachments.

Claire surrendered.

She said Daniel protected her after discovering the program intended to erase both of them.

Daniel returned under medical supervision.

Our reunion carried no instant warmth.

He remembered me only through photographs stolen from family files.

I remembered an empty space no one had named.

He asked whether Margaret had treated me kindly.

I laughed once.

He understood.

Then the investigators found another problem.

Vanessa’s husband, Victor Shaw, had purchased behavioral data from Operation Apron for his defense consulting firm.

Vanessa’s social status and defense access were not separate from the experiment.

She had become part of the system willingly.

The Thanksgiving humiliation was recorded for a current “authority reversal” study.

Her toast had been scripted.

My mother’s apron comment too.

They expected Alexander’s arrival to trigger me into revealing classified status emotionally.

I had been baited inside my own family dinner.
