Chapter 11 - The Other Son

The leaked document was an adoption ledger.

My goal was to identify Helen’s other child before she could erase the record.

The ledger listed twin boys born to Helen Marlowe.

Luke and Nathan.

Luke had been raised by Helen and Arthur.

Nathan had been placed through a private adoption.

Rebecca traced the adoption agency. It had closed decades earlier, but one attorney had retained the files.

Charles Wynn.

Helen’s lawyer.

Ben located Wynn at a private airfield preparing to leave the state. Police had not yet charged him, so Ben used the public leak to pressure him.

Wynn agreed to meet in exchange for immunity discussions.

We met in an airport conference room.

He looked at Luke’s birth records and sighed.

“Helen told Arthur one twin died.”

“What happened to Nathan?” I asked.

Wynn slid a photograph across the table.

Nathan was Dr. Ethan Ward.

My obstetrician.

Helen’s hidden son had controlled my medical care from the first prenatal visit.

The entire conspiracy was a family operation.

Luke appeared violent and unstable.

Ward appeared educated and trustworthy.

Helen used one son to create injuries and the other to explain them away.

Wynn admitted he prepared the forged surrender, but claimed Helen threatened him with evidence of tax fraud.

Rebecca did not believe him.

Neither did I.

“What was Nathan promised?”

“Half the trust.”

“He isn’t Arthur’s son.”

“No,” Wynn said. “But Helen believed Caroline’s child was his.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

Wynn would not meet my eyes.

He showed us a fertility clinic invoice.

During a procedure I believed was a routine cervical exam, Dr. Ward had performed an unauthorized insemination.

The clinic recorded donor code NW-214.

Nathan Ward.

My unborn child might not be Luke’s.

It might be his brother’s.

Maya checked the dates.

The insemination occurred within the conception window.

The paternity result reading HAYES LINE CONFIRMED made sense now because Ward and Luke shared the same maternal DNA, while Arthur’s sample had been used to disguise the mismatch.

I felt my child move beneath my hand.

Whatever the biology, this baby was mine.

Wynn said Helen intended to present Ward as the biological father only if Luke lost control of me. Ward would then petition for custody as the “stable” parent.

Helen had built two legal paths.

Luke if the abuse stayed hidden.

Ward if it became public.

Then Wynn gave us a sealed fertility consent form.

My signature had been forged.

The witness signature belonged to my mother, Evelyn.

Jenna insisted our mother had been confined for years.

Wynn shook his head.

“Evelyn wasn’t confined when she signed this. She walked into my office voluntarily.”

I thought my mother had disappeared to protect me—but the fertility document placed her inside the plan.

The psychiatric facility’s visitor log showed who had been meeting Evelyn every month, and it was not Helen.
