Chapter 7 - The Man in Room 214

Rebecca arranged a private ambulance to Greenhaven.
My goal was to speak to Arthur before Helen reached him.
Dr. Cole objected because of the contractions. I signed myself out under protest and traveled lying on my side with a fetal monitor strapped to me.
Greenhaven looked less like a nursing home than a prison disguised as a garden.
Room 214 was locked from the outside.
Rebecca forced the administrator to open it with a court threat.
Arthur Hayes sat by the window, thin but alert. His eyes fixed on my belly before he looked at my face.
“You’re Caroline.”
I nodded.
He began to cry.
“I told them to stop.”
Maya recorded everything.
Arthur said Helen had declared him dead after he changed the family trust. She bribed a physician to diagnose severe dementia and placed him under a false name.
“Why would she need my baby?” I asked.
Arthur’s hands shook.
“Because Luke is not my son.”
I already suspected that.
Then he continued.
“But your child is still my blood.”
The room went silent.
Arthur opened a locked drawer and removed a photograph.
It showed my mother, Evelyn Parker, standing beside Arthur thirty-two years earlier.
On the back was written: Caroline, six months old.
Arthur looked directly at me.
“I’m your biological father.”
The floor seemed to move beneath me.
Luke was not Arthur’s son.
I was Arthur’s daughter.
My unborn child was the first biological grandchild named in the trust.
Helen did not need Luke to be the father.
She needed control of me.
Arthur said Helen discovered the truth during my engagement to Luke. She encouraged the marriage because it brought me legally into her household.
“She planned to take the baby through Luke, then control the trust as guardian.”
Rebecca asked why Arthur had not exposed her.
Arthur pointed to a feeding tube scar.
“She kept me drugged. When I resisted, Dr. Ward increased the dose.”
Again, the same doctor.
Arthur gave me a small key.
“Safe-deposit box 417. Everything is there.”
Before he could explain more, the facility alarm activated.
The administrator entered with two orderlies.
“Mr. Hayes is experiencing delusions. Everyone must leave.”
Rebecca displayed her bar card.
The administrator displayed a guardianship order.
Helen Hayes was Arthur’s legal guardian.
She had authority to remove visitors.
Arthur grabbed my wrist.
“Don’t trust the trust amendment.”
“What amendment?”
“They changed the final beneficiary.”
An orderly injected something into Arthur’s IV.
His eyes rolled back.
Maya filmed it, but the administrator seized her phone and crushed it beneath his shoe.
Ben tackled one orderly. Rebecca pulled me toward the hall.
Arthur forced out one final sentence before losing consciousness.
“The baby isn’t the heir anymore—you are.”
May you like
I thought Helen wanted my child for the family fortune—but Arthur revealed that my own identity controlled everything.
The safe-deposit box contained proof of my inheritance, but it also named the person who had betrayed me before I ever married Luke.
