Chapter 12 - My Mother’s Visitor

The private psychiatric facility was called Willow Ridge.

My goal was to confront Evelyn and learn why her signature appeared on the fertility form.

The state health department, now watching the scandal, forced Willow Ridge to release records.

Evelyn had received one regular visitor.

Arthur Hayes.

He had visited under a false name for six years.

My mother and biological father had been in contact the entire time.

When we entered her room, Evelyn sat near the window, older but fully aware.

She looked at me and said, “You found the box.”

No confusion.

No dementia.

No surprise.

I wanted to embrace her.

I also wanted to demand why she had let me believe she was dead.

“Did you sign the fertility consent?”

“Yes.”

The word broke something inside me.

She explained that Helen threatened to expose my parentage and destroy Arthur’s trust unless Evelyn cooperated.

“That doesn’t explain signing away my body.”

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“I thought the procedure was a paternity safeguard. They said Luke was infertile and you wanted a child.”

“I never said that.”

“I know that now.”

Maya placed the forged form on the table.

Evelyn’s signature was real, but the procedure description had been replaced after signing.

Another document switch.

The same method used on Jenna.

Evelyn handed me a stack of letters she had secretly kept.

Arthur wrote that Helen had placed listening devices in Willow Ridge and controlled his visits.

Together, they tried to gather evidence.

They failed repeatedly because Dr. Ward supervised both facilities.

Then Evelyn gave me the strongest item yet.

An audio recorder hidden inside a paperback book.

On the recording, Helen discussed the entire plan with Ward.

Ward said, “If the fetus survives the heat, the medication will trigger labor.”

Helen answered, “And if Caroline survives?”

Ward replied, “The psychiatric unit keeps her until Luke’s guardianship is permanent.”

There was no ambiguity.

Premeditation.

Medical conspiracy.

Fraud.

Attempted murder.

Then a third voice entered the conversation.

Luke.

“I don’t want her dead,” he said. “I just want her scared enough to sign.”

For the first time, he sounded uncertain.

Helen answered, “Then you should have married a weaker woman.”

Luke had not designed the plan.

But he had agreed to it.

Evelyn revealed one final fact.

The recording was made yesterday.

Helen and Ward had visited Willow Ridge while Luke was preparing the garage.

They believed Evelyn was sedated.

She was not.

Rebecca listened again to a background sound.

A train horn.

Willow Ridge had no railway nearby.

Maya checked the room acoustics.

The recording had not been made at Willow Ridge.

Evelyn had lied about where she captured it.

She admitted the truth.

“I met them at the Hayes house.”

“You went back there?”

“I never left it.”

A hidden passage connected the Hayes property to an old service tunnel beneath the neighboring lot.

My mother had been living less than two hundred yards from me.

I thought Evelyn was another victim—but she had been secretly inside Helen’s house collecting evidence for months.

What she found beneath the garage proved the red iron bar was not the first weapon tested there.
