Chapter 13 - Beneath the Concrete

Evelyn drew a map of the service tunnel.

My goal was to enter beneath the garage and recover whatever Helen had hidden.

Police now had enough for warrants, but Rebecca feared Helen would destroy the underground evidence before officers arrived. We went with a state investigator named Dana Price, who documented every step.

The tunnel entrance was behind a false utility panel in the vacant house next door.

It led beneath the Hayes garage.

The air smelled of rust and bleach.

Under the concrete floor, we found a reinforced room.

Shelves held medication, restraints, cameras, burner phones, and labeled boxes.

CAROLINE.

ARTHUR.

EVELYN.

JENNA.

Even LUKE.

Helen had collected leverage on everyone.

My box contained medical photographs of my bruises, edited videos, forged psychiatric notes, and recordings of arguments.

Luke’s box contained footage of Helen instructing him.

“Grip her wrist where sleeves will cover it.”

“Never strike the face before an appointment.”

“Make her doubt what happened.”

He had been trained.

That did not excuse him.

But it revealed how long Helen had been building him into a weapon.

Dana opened a metal cabinet.

Inside were hospital wristbands from three pregnant women.

All had been patients of Dr. Ward.

All had later been declared mentally incompetent.

Rebecca searched court records.

Judge Voss had approved guardianships in every case.

Their babies had been placed with wealthy families connected to Helen’s private adoption network.

My case was not unique.

I was the latest model.

Then we found the red iron bars.

Six of them.

Each tagged with temperature, duration, and tissue response estimates.

The garage attack had been a rehearsed procedure.

Dana photographed everything.

A steel door slammed above us.

The tunnel lights went out.

Helen’s voice came through a hidden speaker.

“You always were stubborn, Caroline.”

Emergency lights flickered on.

Luke stood at the far end of the tunnel holding a fuel can.

His face was bruised. His burned hand was bandaged.

Helen ordered him to pour fuel across the floor.

He did not move.

“Do it,” she said.

Luke looked at me.

For the first time, I saw fear without rage.

“She said she’d kill Nathan if I didn’t bring you back,” he whispered.

Ward stepped from behind him.

Luke turned.

The hidden brother had been there the entire time.

Ward held a syringe against Luke’s neck.

“You were always the disposable one,” he said.

Luke knocked the syringe away.

The brothers crashed into the shelves.

Dana pulled me toward the tunnel exit while Rebecca grabbed the evidence drive.

Helen triggered a sprinkler system.

Not water.

Accelerant rained from the pipes.

Luke shouted, “Run!”

A spark flashed near the electrical panel.

Then Maya found a manual cut-off valve and slammed it shut.

The fire did not ignite.

Helen’s perfect trap failed because she had labeled the emergency system in her own control diagrams.

Dana arrested Ward at the tunnel mouth.

Luke escaped into the neighboring yard.

Helen disappeared.

We had the underground laboratory, the adoption records, and the victims’ files.

Then Rebecca opened the box labeled LUKE.

Inside was a DNA report proving Luke and Ward were not twins.

They were not even biologically related.

I thought Helen had raised two sons to serve the same plan—but one of them had been stolen from another victim.

The identity of Helen’s real child turned the coming trial into something no one expected.
