Chapter 8 - Box 417

The bank opened at nine.
My goal was to access box 417 before Helen froze Arthur’s accounts.
Rebecca obtained an emergency order recognizing Arthur’s key and recorded statement. Maya used a backup device to upload what remained of the Greenhaven video.
At First County Bank, the manager examined the key.
“This box requires two signatories.”
“Arthur Hayes and whom?” Rebecca asked.
The manager turned the screen away.
“Caroline Parker.”
My birth name.
Not Caroline Hayes.
I had not used Parker since marrying Luke.
The manager compared my old license record and allowed access.
Inside box 417 were three folders, a flash drive, and a sealed letter.
The first folder held DNA results proving Arthur was my biological father.
The second held the original Hayes trust.
The third contained bank transfers from Hayes Family Holdings to Dr. Ward, Paul Denton, Charles Wynn, and Greenhaven.
Every person in the conspiracy had been paid.
The flash drive contained recorded calls.
Helen’s voice was calm and precise.
Keep Caroline dependent.
Increase Luke’s aggression only when necessary.
The burns must appear self-inflicted.
Secure surrender before delivery.
Then another voice answered.
My mother’s.
Evelyn Parker.
“Caroline can never learn Arthur is her father.”
I stopped breathing.
My mother had died when I was twenty-four.
At least, that was what I believed.
The letter in the box was addressed to me in her handwriting.
Rebecca opened it with my permission.
Caroline, if you are reading this, Helen has already found out about you. I lied to protect you. Arthur tried to leave Helen, but she threatened Luke’s life. I agreed to disappear if she stayed away from you.
Disappeared.
Not died.
Maya searched death records.
My mother’s death certificate had been signed by Dr. Ward.
No burial record existed.
No cremation number.
The same pattern as Arthur.
The bank manager returned, pale.
“Mrs. Hayes, there is a second box linked to your signature.”
Box 418.
It had been opened the previous afternoon.
The access log showed my fingerprint authorization.
Impossible.
I had been locked in the garage.
Security footage showed a woman in a cream maternity dress entering the vault.
Her face was hidden beneath a scarf.
She moved slowly, one hand on a pregnant belly.
Helen had used a pregnant double.
The woman left carrying a black document case.
The manager zoomed in.
On her exposed wrist was a tattoo: a small blue swallow.
I knew that tattoo.
It belonged to my younger sister, Jenna Parker.
The sister who had stopped speaking to me after my wedding.

I thought my mother had betrayed me—but the bank footage proved my living sister was working inside Helen’s plan.
The file Jenna stole explained why Helen no longer needed the forged custody petition to control my child.
