Chapter 9 - THE FLOODED CHURCH

Margaret took Lily to an abandoned church on the edge of a floodplain.

The building contained temporary bedrooms, medical cabinets, and adoption documents.

Police found six children.

Lily was not among them.

One girl wore Lily’s bracelet.

Another had her medical file.

The network distributed pieces of identity across children to make tracing impossible.

Then a small boy told investigators:

“The lady took the real Lily to the water house.”

Michael remembered an old Collins pumping station beneath the river levee.

We entered only after a court-approved rescue operation.

Inside, water rose through the lower tunnels.

Margaret stood on a metal walkway holding Lily.

She threatened to drop the child unless Sarah signed temporary guardianship.

I did not negotiate privately.

Officers surrounded her.

Claire distracted Margaret by calling Evelyn’s name.

Margaret turned.

Michael moved.

Lily was rescued.

Margaret was arrested.

Then Lily looked at me and said:

“You’re not my mommy.”

She was right.
