Chapter 14 - The Second Black Card

Adrian did not get to leave this time.

Neither did I.

Ava needed overnight monitoring because of the stress surrounding the earlier incident, and my own blood pressure had climbed enough that my doctor insisted I stay another night.

So the most important financial confrontation of my life happened in a maternity-room conference suite with a breast pump in one corner.

Real life rarely respects genre.

Merritt Private Bank accelerated the secure-reader delivery after hospital administration documented an active coercion attempt.

The device arrived at seven the next morning.

Two bank security specialists carried it.

No one else touched it.

The Vances were not allowed in the room during authentication.

Neither was Adrian.

I insisted on that.

If the black card opened my father’s archive, I wanted the first moment to belong to me.

I held the metal card.

For the first time since Charles gave it to me.

I remembered his hand around mine.

“Never write the PIN.”

“I won’t.”

“And if somebody scares you into giving it?”

“I don’t scare easily.”

My father had smiled sadly.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Back then I thought he was being dramatic.

Now I knew.

I entered the PIN.

Four digits.

My mother’s birthday.

Julian had never known her.

That was why none of his guesses worked.

The reader accepted it.

FOUNDER IDENTITY VERIFIED.

The Founder Reserve remained frozen.

Good.

Then the sealed archive opened.

Folders appeared.

VANCE OWNERSHIP.

HALE FRAUD.

ANNA CROSS.

AVA PROTOCOL.

FINAL.

And one physical-access instruction.

SECOND TOKEN REQUIRED FOR FINAL VIDEO.

My stomach tightened.

“What second token?”

The bank specialist checked the founder memo.

“A companion card.”

“I don’t have one.”

“Location instruction says Charles Cole private home safe.”

The lake house.

Where Melissa had broken in.

Adrian was already there yesterday.

I called him into the room.

“Did you find another card?”

His face changed.

“No.”

“Did Melissa take it?”

“I don’t know.”

Then he remembered something.

The envelope Charles left him.

He had brought its contents back.

Inside the paper sleeve was a thin black rectangle he assumed was a protective insert.

Not plastic.

Metal.

A second card.

Same design.

Different name etched along the edge.

ADRIAN COLE.

My chest tightened.

Two tokens.

Claire and Adrian.

Our father forced both children to authenticate the final file together.

Control through division.

Again.

I almost hated him for how predictable that had become.

Adrian inserted his card.

The reader requested his PIN.

He stared.

“Dad never gave me one.”

Then a hint appeared.

THE DAY YOU STOPPED BEING MY SON AND BECAME MY PARTNER.

Adrian’s eyes filled.

I had not seen my brother cry in twenty years.

He entered a date.

Accepted.

The final archive opened.

Not the video yet.

First, a document.

CHARLES COLE—PERSONAL FINDINGS.

My father identified Anna Cross and Richard Hale as internal conspirators.

He believed they manipulated the Vance dispute to gain access to the Founder Reserve archive.

But one section was highlighted.

RICHARD AND ANNA ARE NOT WORKING FOR THE SAME END.

Richard wanted to conceal legal fraud surrounding Martin Vance’s company.

Anna wanted revenge against Cole Meridian.

Their alliance would fracture once the archive opened.

That meant both had reasons to find me now.

Then another line:

BEATRICE VANCE IS DANGEROUS UNDER PRESSURE BUT IS NOT THE ARCHITECT.

Accurate.

JULIAN VANCE KNOWS MORE THAN CLAIRE BELIEVES AND LESS THAN BEATRICE THINKS.

Also plausible.

Then:

ADRIAN MADE ONE DECISION I CANNOT UNDO FOR HIM.

I looked at my brother.

He went pale.

“What decision?”

“I don’t know.”

I scrolled.

The next page was encrypted.

Video required.

Before we played it, Merritt’s security specialist interrupted.

“We have an external authentication attempt.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“Someone is trying to use a cloned companion token.”

“Adrian’s?”

“Yes.”

Location:

Cole Meridian headquarters.

Anna.

Or Richard.

They knew we had opened the archive.

Then my phone rang.

Julian.

“Claire, Ethan’s gone.”

“What?”

“He left ten minutes ago.”

“Where?”

“We don’t know.”

“Why tell me?”

“Because he took Mom’s phone.”

Beatrice’s phone contained her old messages with Anna.

Potentially enough to locate the insider.

Then Sarah came running toward the glass door with hospital security behind her.

She held up her own phone.

“Claire!”

I stepped outside.

“What?”

She showed me a live location.

Beatrice had secretly shared her phone location with Sarah months earlier.

The device was moving.

Fast.

Toward Cole Meridian.

Ethan was going to the same place someone was trying to clone Adrian’s token.

Why?

Sarah whispered:

“He thinks Anna can erase our debt.”

Julian swore.

Adrian grabbed his coat.

I blocked him.

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You followed Melissa once already.”

“And lost the binder.”

“Yes.”

He stopped.

That landed.

We called authorities handling the financial evidence instead.

Then the secure-reader screen changed.

A final message from Charles appeared:

DO NOT CHASE THEM.

MAKE THEM COME TO THE ARCHIVE.

Adrian and I stared.

Dad had anticipated even this.

A second line appeared.

THE MOMENT BOTH TOKENS OPEN FINAL, THE FALSE ARCHIVE BECOMES VISIBLE TO OUTSIDE USERS.

A honeypot.

Anyone trying to steal the files would believe the archive was exposed.

They would come.

And according to building security, someone had just entered Cole Meridian using Richard Hale’s emergency badge.

Then another person followed using Melissa Grant’s old executive credential.

Two suspects.

Same building.

Different entrances.

The trap was closing.

Or we were walking into theirs without moving.
