Chapter 9 - Sarah Had Met My Father in Secret

Sarah agreed to talk only if Adrian stayed out.

That immediately made me suspicious.

I still agreed.

Not alone.

Hospital security positioned outside my room.

Lauren remained at the nursing station.

Ava slept beside me.

Sarah entered without heels this time.

Flat shoes.

No makeup.

The burgundy blouse from the assault was gone.

She looked less powerful without costume.

Not harmless.

Just human.

“Why did Dad meet you?”

She glanced toward the door.

“He wanted information.”

“About Julian?”

“About everyone.”

“Start with Julian.”

Sarah sat.

“Charles knew Julian had researched the Founder Reserve.”

“How?”

“He had people watching bank inquiries.”

“Why did Julian research it?”

“Because Mom told him the reserve could wipe out our debt.”

There.

Direct motive.

“Did Julian marry me for it?”

Sarah hesitated.

“Not originally.”

“Do not protect him.”

“I’m not.”

“Then answer.”

“He knew who you were when you met.”

My chest tightened.

“Did he approach me deliberately?”

“Yes.”

Even though I expected it, the answer hurt.

“Who arranged it?”

“Mom.”

Of course.

Beatrice had known our families’ financial history.

She had encouraged Julian to attend the charity event where we met.

She had seen me as a route back to Charles.

“But Julian didn’t expect to stay,” Sarah said.

“What does that mean?”

“Mom wanted him close to you. Information. Maybe pressure. Then he actually wanted the marriage.”

I almost laughed.

“Comforting.”

“I’m not asking you to forgive him.”

“Good.”

Sarah looked toward Ava.

Then quickly away.

“What did my father want from you?”

“He wanted me to copy Beatrice’s records.”

“Why you?”

“Because he knew I was scared.”

“Of your mother?”

“Of the debt.”

Vance Clinical had been failing for years.

Sarah had personally guaranteed loans.

Ethan too.

Julian had hidden some of his exposure from me.

Beatrice controlled the family through those debts.

Charles offered Sarah three million dollars and full legal protection if she gave him proof of who inside Cole Meridian was feeding Beatrice trust documents.

“Did you know?”

Sarah nodded.

My pulse jumped.

“Who?”

“I knew a name.”

“Tell me.”

“Charles already suspected Richard.”

“Who else?”

She looked at me.

Then said:

“Adrian.”

I stared.

“No.”

“He believed Adrian was involved.”

“My father wrote that Adrian’s credentials were compromised.”

“He wrote a lot of things.”

“Proof?”

Sarah reached into her bag slowly.

Security had searched it.

She removed a printed email.

FROM: ADRIAN COLE

TO: BEATRICE VANCE

SUBJECT: RESERVE TIMING.

Body:

THE TRANSFER DOES NOT ACTIVATE UNTIL CLAIRE HAS A CHILD.

DO NOT CONTACT ME AGAIN ON THIS ADDRESS.

My stomach tightened.

Adrian’s corporate signature appeared below.

Date:

Two years earlier.

Before my father died.

“Could be forged.”

“Yes.”

Sarah surprised me.

“I never said it wasn’t.”

“Then why show me?”

“Because Charles asked the same question.”

She said my father tested her.

He showed her the email and asked whether Beatrice received anything directly from Adrian.

Sarah said no.

She had seen Beatrice communicating with someone under the name A.C., but never witnessed Adrian himself.

Charles offered Sarah protection if she stole the device Beatrice used.

“What happened?”

“I agreed.”

My pulse shifted.

“You just said you told him no.”

“I told him no at the restaurant.”

“Then?”

“Three days later I changed my mind.”

“Why?”

“Ethan found out how much we really owed.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-one million.”

More than the clawback.

Their family was drowning.

“Did you get Beatrice’s device?”

“Yes.”

“What was on it?”

“Messages.”

“With A.C.?”

“Yes.”

“Who was A.C.?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is the device?”

Sarah’s face changed.

“Charles had it.”

My father died two days later.

The device disappeared.

Then Sarah said something worse.

“The night before Charles died, he called me.”

“What did he say?”

“He said A.C. wasn’t Adrian.”

My heart jumped.

“Who was it?”

“He didn’t tell me.”

“Why?”

“He said he needed one more confirmation.”

“And then he died.”

“Yes.”

Charles’s official cause of death had been a stroke.

Natural.

Expected, according to his doctors.

But now the timing looked different.

I forced myself not to turn suspicion into fact.

“Why did you attack me yesterday?”

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“Because Mom said Charles left a copy of that device inside the Founder Reserve archive.”

“And you believed the PIN opened it.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened my newborn for a device.”

“I didn’t threaten Ava.”

I stared.

Sarah looked ashamed.

“I demanded the PIN.”

“You held my hair while your mother carried my daughter to a window.”

“I know.”

“You stayed.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t stop her.”

“No.”

That was the first accountability I heard from any Vance.

Not enough.

But real.

Then I asked:

“Why tell me now?”

Sarah looked toward the hallway.

“Because Mom is going to blame everything on Julian.”

“And?”

“She can.”

“You care?”

“No.”

She leaned closer.

“But Julian wasn’t the one who told us which hospital room you’d be in, when Adrian would arrive, or how to use Cole Meridian’s recovery token.”

My pulse slowed.

“Who did?”

Sarah whispered:

“A.C.”

The same hidden insider my father died trying to identify.

Then she gave me one more piece.

Beatrice had received a message ten minutes before Adrian entered the hospital room:

COLE IS ON THE WAY. GET THE PIN BEFORE HE ARRIVES.
