Chapter 8 - The File Named for a Baby Who Did Not Exist Yet

I stared at the words.
AVA PROTOCOL.
“That’s impossible.”
Adrian checked the creation date again.
Eleven months before my pregnancy.
Four days before my father died.
“Maybe Ava was a project name.”
“My daughter’s name was Dad’s idea.”
Adrian looked at me.
“What?”
I remembered the conversation.
Charles was already sick.
I sat beside him at home, talking about names Julian and I liked if we ever had children.
My father said:
“If you have a girl, Ava.”
I laughed.
“Why?”
“Short. Strong. Hard to mispronounce.”
I never forgot it.
Months after he died, when the pregnancy test turned positive, Julian and I chose Ava.
My father had named the folder first.
Not because he predicted the future.
Because he planted the name.
“Dad wanted me to use it.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Why would he care?”
We requested the file from Cole Meridian’s secure backup.
Richard had copied it.
He had also tried to delete the access trail.
He failed.
Charles knew how to design systems around untrustworthy people.
The Ava Protocol contained no baby photographs.
No sentimental letter.
It was an investigative plan.
Target entities:
Vance Clinical Partners.
Hale Legal Group.
Three shell companies.
And one individual:
JULIAN VANCE.
My throat tightened.
My father had investigated my husband while smiling through our wedding.
The first document was dated sixteen months earlier.
Charles had learned Julian asked a private fertility attorney about “future child-beneficiary control.”
Not because we had fertility problems.
We hadn’t even started trying.
Julian wanted to know whether a spouse could control a trust triggered by childbirth if the mother was temporarily incapacitated.
My stomach turned.
He had researched the exact scenario before Ava existed.
Another memo showed Beatrice asking Richard Hale for Charles’s generational trust templates.
Sarah requested copies of hospital spousal-consent rules.
Ethan researched Merritt Private Bank authentication.
Pieces.
Years apart.
Each harmless alone.
Together:
Planning.
Adrian whispered:
“Dad knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he stop the wedding?”
That question hurt.
Charles could have told me.
He could have shown me Julian’s requests.
Instead, he stayed silent.
Then I reached the founder note attached to the file.
CLAIRE WILL NOT BELIEVE A WARNING WITHOUT PROOF SHE DISCOVERS HERSELF.
I almost threw the tablet.
“He manipulated me too.”
Adrian didn’t defend him.
“Yes.”
“He let me marry Julian.”
“Yes.”
“He let me build a life with him.”
“Yes.”
“He decided I needed to learn it the hard way.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Dad loved control more than he admitted.”
The truth hurt because it could hold two things at once.
My father may have protected me.
He also treated my life like a strategy.
I kept reading.
The Ava Protocol stated that Charles had changed the Founder Reserve to activate only upon the birth of my first child because he wanted to force anyone targeting my future inheritance to act during a narrow, observable period.
He built bait.
The forty-eight million was bait.
The black card was bait.
And without telling me, he made my future baby part of the trigger.
I felt nauseated.
“Dad used Ava before she existed.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“He expected paperwork manipulation. Not this.”
“Does that make it acceptable?”
“No.”
Good answer.
Then we found the line that changed everything.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS NOT ASSET PROTECTION.
OBJECTIVE IS IDENTIFICATION OF INTERNAL FACILITATOR.
My father’s real target was not Julian.
Not Beatrice.
Not Sarah.
He knew the Vances wanted money.
He wanted to identify who inside Cole Meridian was helping them.
Richard was one suspect.
But Charles wrote:
R.H. DOES NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT ACCESS ALONE.
SECOND INTERNAL ACTOR REQUIRED.
Someone else.
Higher or better positioned.
The stolen executive recovery token.
Adrian’s forged authorization.
The six-million transfer.
Someone had access beyond Richard.
I looked at my brother.
He understood.
“That’s why Dad didn’t tell either of us everything.”
“He suspected someone close.”
“Yes.”
My phone buzzed.
A message from Sarah.
I KNOW WHAT YOUR FATHER PUT IN THE AVA FILE.
I stared.
HOW?
Three dots appeared.
Then:
BECAUSE HE SHOWED IT TO ME.
My heart stopped.
Sarah claimed Charles personally met with her before he died.
Another message:
HE OFFERED ME MONEY TO BETRAY MY FAMILY.
Then:
I SAID NO.
A photograph arrived.
Charles Cole sitting across from Sarah at a restaurant.
Date-stamped six days before his death.
