Chapter 11 - I Was Angry at the Wrong Thing

For weeks, I obsessed over Isabella.

Her dress.

Her heel hitting my side.

Her voice.

Her fake tears.

But therapy forced me to look somewhere harder.

Marcus.

Isabella was an obvious danger.

Marcus was the person I trusted.

He wasn't responsible for her violence.

He was responsible for creating a marriage where I had no warning she existed as a threat.

That distinction mattered.

One evening he came to the house to bring paperwork.

He didn't ask to stay.

Before leaving, he said:

“I keep wanting to explain why I cheated.”

“I don't want the explanation yet.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

“I want you to understand why telling me afterward doesn't fix it.”

“I do.”

“No. Say it.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“Because every day I hid it, I took away your ability to decide what kind of marriage you were actually in.”

That was the first answer that sounded like he understood.

Meanwhile, Andrew's resignation triggered consequences within the company.

The board opened a formal inquiry.

The distribution negotiations were paused.

Thorne Medical's valuation suffered.

Employees who had nothing to do with Marcus's affair suddenly faced uncertainty.

That mattered too.

Private dishonesty had become public risk.

Marcus could no longer frame his choices as personal mistakes affecting only three adults.

Then Isabella’s attorney communicated that she wanted to resolve the matter.

Not confess.

Not apologize.

Negotiate.

And one condition was clear.

She did not want the full hospital footage formally used against her.

That told me the camera still held something we hadn’t seen.
