Chapter 2 - She Knew Which Room I’d Be In

The first priority was the baby.

I was already inside St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Boston for a fundraising gala, so I was taken directly upstairs for evaluation.

Marcus stayed beside me.

Isabella disappeared.

Elaine remained long enough to confirm the security footage had been preserved according to hospital policy.

That mattered later.

At the time, I cared about only one sound.

Our daughter’s heartbeat.

Strong.

Steady.

The physician told me I had bruising but no immediate sign of placental injury. I would need monitoring and strict instructions for the next several days.

Only after that did I turn to Marcus.

“How did Isabella know where I was?”

He looked tired.

“She was invited to the gala.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

The hospital event occupied four floors.

The private suite where she found me wasn’t open to ordinary guests.

Marcus rubbed his jaw.

“She probably followed someone.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

I watched him.

Marcus was terrible at lying when he was afraid.

He became too careful.

“What did she mean when she said I was standing next to you?”

His eyes shifted.

“Khloe…”

“No.”

I pulled the blanket higher over my stomach.

“You explain tonight. Not tomorrow.”

Isabella wasn’t a stranger.

She was an executive consultant who had worked with Marcus’s medical-device company for nearly two years.

Beautiful.

Confident.

Frequently present at dinners and business trips.

I had asked about her once.

Marcus told me there was nothing to worry about.

Now she had attacked his pregnant wife inside a locked hospitality suite.

“That wasn’t jealousy from across a ballroom,” I said. “She came looking for me.”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Then Elaine knocked.

She held a hospital tablet.

“There’s something you should see.”

Marcus stood immediately.

Too immediately.

Elaine noticed.

So did I.

“What is it?”

She looked directly at Marcus.

“The camera outside that room recorded someone giving Ms. Rossi an access badge.”

I already knew the answer before she turned the screen toward me.

The person on the video was my husband.
