Chapter 1 - The Red Button

“Tell them you slipped.”

David’s hand closed around the front of my green blouse.

Before I could step back, he drove me into the corner of the kitchen island.

My hip struck first.

My right foot caught beneath me, and I crashed onto the wooden floor with my leg folded at a sickening angle.

The grocery bag tipped beside me. Oranges rolled beneath the cabinets.

My phone skidded toward the pantry.

For one stunned second, I couldn’t breathe.

Then pain tore through my knee and climbed into my hip.

Emma stood near the doorway in her yellow pajamas, frozen and barefoot.

My mother-in-law, Margaret, remained behind the island with a glass of wine in her hand.

She watched me try to stand.

My injured leg collapsed beneath me.

David crouched, seized my wrist, and pushed my hand toward the phone.

“You’re calling the doctor,” he whispered. “You’re telling them you fell.”

Margaret took a slow sip.

“No one will believe you.”

That was when I looked at Emma.

I raised two fingers beside my face.

The secret signal.

Her crying stopped.

“Red button,” I whispered.

Emma ran to the side table and pressed the oversized button on the black landline phone.

David released me.

“Who taught her that?”

The call connected.

Emma gripped the receiver with both hands.

“Grandpa… Mom can’t stand.”

My father’s voice came through the speaker.

Calm. Controlled.

“Did he touch her?”

Margaret lunged for the phone.

I slammed my palm against the floor.

Emma tightened her grip.

Headlights swept across the kitchen wall.

Then I reached beneath the island cabinet and pulled out the dark folder I had hidden there that morning.

David stared at it.

Margaret’s wineglass began to shake.

I looked directly at my husband.

“Ask him where my money went.”

David slowly turned toward his mother.

Because the transfers inside that folder carried both their names.

👉 My father had not taught Emma the emergency signal because he feared David might lose his temper. He taught it because he already knew someone had been stealing from me.
