Chapter 4 - The House in Madison

My father entered through the front door with two men behind him.

One was a retired police captain he trusted.

The other was a fraud attorney named Evelyn Shaw.

David’s face changed when he recognized her.

That told me they had met before.

Margaret lowered her wineglass.

“What are you doing in my son’s house?”

My father looked at me on the floor.

“This is Sarah’s house too.”

He crossed the kitchen and knelt beside me.

When he saw the angle of my leg, his jaw tightened.

He called an ambulance.

David tried to stop him.

“She slipped.”

Emma still held the receiver.

My father looked at her.

“What happened, sweetheart?”

“Daddy pushed Mommy.”

David moved toward her.

The retired captain stepped between them.

“Don’t.”

David stopped.

While we waited for paramedics, Evelyn opened the folder I had hidden.

She explained that the money had not remained in Marlow Family Holdings.

It had been wired to a property trust.

The trust had purchased a six-bedroom house in Madison, Connecticut.

Ocean views.

Private road.

Furnished nursery.

I stared at David.

“We don’t own a house in Madison.”

He looked away.

Margaret answered for him.

“It was an investment.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“The occupancy records list David Bennett and Claire Morgan.”

Claire was David’s executive assistant.

Thirty-one.

Blonde.

Always smiling too warmly whenever I visited his office.

I remembered David missing Emma’s preschool performance because Claire’s “mother was ill.”

I remembered a hotel receipt in his jacket pocket.

I remembered Margaret once calling me “temporary” during an argument and pretending it was a joke.

The Madison house was not an investment.

It was the life David was preparing after he removed me from ours.

But Evelyn revealed something worse.

The property included a custodial suite decorated for a young girl.
