Chapter 5 - The Custody File

The paramedics stabilized my leg and carried me from the kitchen.
Before they closed the ambulance doors, David appeared on the driveway.
He looked frightened now.
Not sorry.
“Sarah, don’t let your father turn this into something it isn’t.”
I stared at him through the open doors.
“You pushed me.”
“You were waving that phone in my face.”
“So I deserved it?”
He lowered his voice.
“Think about Emma.”
That was exactly what I was doing.
At the hospital, X-rays showed a fractured knee and severe ligament damage.
Surgery would be required.
My father stayed beside me while Evelyn continued investigating.
She found a family-court preparation file on David’s office computer.
It described me as unstable, financially reckless, and increasingly paranoid.
It claimed I frightened Emma with accusations about stolen money.
There were photographs of me crying.
Audio clips of arguments.
Messages copied without context.
David had been building a custody case for months.
Margaret had written statements describing me as “emotionally volatile.”
Claire had signed a declaration saying David often stayed late at work because he feared returning home.
Every witness in his file depended on him financially.
The plan was simple.
Move my inheritance.
Provoke me.
Document my reactions.
Then file for emergency custody after claiming I had become dangerous.
The kitchen attack was not planned.
But the lie afterward was automatic.
Tell them you slipped.
He believed I had no evidence.
He did not know Emma’s call activated exterior audio recording.
The security system had captured his first words after shoving me.
It had also recorded Margaret saying:
“No one will believe you.”
The footage did not show the attack inside the kitchen.
But it recorded Emma’s statement seconds later.
Daddy pushed Mommy.
Then Evelyn found a second file.
A proposed medical guardianship petition.
David intended to argue that my injury made me temporarily unable to care for Emma.
