Chapter 14 - MARGARET’S LETTER
Years later, Margaret wrote to me through approved channels.
I almost threw the letter away.
Instead I read it.
She did not ask forgiveness.
That surprised me.
She wrote:
I spent my life believing security meant controlling whatever could be taken from me. I taught Brandon the same thing. Eventually we treated you like an obstacle between us and things we believed we deserved.
She acknowledged the courtyard.
She acknowledged looking down.
She acknowledged doing nothing.
No excuse.
No request.
I wrote no reply.
Closure does not require correspondence.
Sometimes understanding why someone hurt you is useful.
Sometimes it is merely information.
Margaret’s fear of poverty explained the beginning of her obsession.
Greed explained some.
Entitlement explained more.
