Chapter 1 - THE DOCUMENT BEHIND THE DIVORCE PAPERS

Adrian hit me with the riding crop before anyone in the ballroom moved.
The leather snapped across my upper back.
Pain exploded beneath the blue fabric of my evening gown, and one knee struck the marble floor.
“You’re nothing but a filthy piece of trash beneath my feet!”
His voice carried beneath the crystal chandelier.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody intervened either.
Vanessa Cole stood beside him in a bright pink gown, one hand wrapped around a champagne flute, smiling as though my humiliation were the entertainment Adrian had promised her.
I put one hand against the floor.
“Clara, stay down,” Adrian said.
I pushed myself halfway up.
Vanessa crossed the space between us and caught my chin between her fingers.
“He finally traded up.”
She shoved my face aside.
I knocked her hand away.
“Touch me again.”
My voice shook.
Not from fear.
From the amount of anger I was trying not to let loose.
“You’ll regret touching me.”
Adrian laughed.
Then he slammed a burgundy folder against my chest.
The impact pushed me back onto one knee.
“Sign it.”
The folder fell open.
DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
He kicked it toward me.
Vanessa rested one hand over her stomach and leaned against him.
Adrian looked down at me.
“You’re the mistake. She’s my future.”
My eyes moved to her hand.
Her stomach.
Of course.
That was how he wanted me to discover it.
Not privately.
Not with one final shred of decency.
In front of nearly forty guests gathered inside the Vale mansion for what Adrian had told everyone was our eighth-anniversary party.
Vanessa was pregnant.
Or wanted me to believe she was.
I lowered my eyes to the papers.
“You want me to sign tonight?”
“I want you gone tonight.”
The guests shifted uncomfortably.
A few were Adrian’s business partners.
Several were members of the Vale family.
His mother had not come.
That was strange.
Eleanor Vale never missed an opportunity to watch me fail.
I opened the folder.
The settlement was exactly what I expected.
The house stayed with Adrian.
I waived claims against Vale Development Group.
No spousal support.
A confidentiality clause broad enough to prevent me from discussing almost anything that happened during our marriage.
Then something thick caught beneath the final page.
Not part of the divorce agreement.
A sealed white envelope.
Adrian saw it.
His face changed.
Just slightly.
“Give me that.”
I looked up.
“What is it?”
“It’s nothing.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared too.
That interested me more.
I opened the envelope.
One financial document.
I read the first three lines.
Then the pain across my back seemed to vanish.
Not because it hurt less.
Because suddenly the room had become much more important than my body.
The document wasn’t Adrian’s.
It wasn’t even from Vale Development.
It bore the name of a private holding company I had not seen in eight years.
Northstar Meridian Holdings.
My father’s company.
I read one more line.
Then another.
Adrian stepped toward me.
“Clara.”
For the first time that evening, there was uncertainty in his voice.
I folded the document.
Vanessa lunged.
“Give me that!”
I shoved her hand away.
She came again.
I stood.
My palm crossed her face once.
Hard.
She stumbled one step backward.
The entire ballroom froze.
Adrian stared at me.
I took out my phone.
“Who are you calling?”
I looked directly at him.
Then pressed the one contact I had not used in nearly six years.
He answered on the second ring.
“Clara?”
My father’s voice.
Older.
Still unmistakable.
I stared at Adrian.
“Dad.”
Adrian’s face drained.
“It’s time.”
Silence on the other end.
Then:
“Did you find the Northstar document?”
I closed my eyes.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“About Adrian?”
A longer silence.
“Enough.”
I looked at my husband.
For eight years, Adrian had told me my family abandoned me.
For six, I had believed him.
Then Dad said:
“Clara, don’t sign anything.”
Adrian stepped toward me.
I raised one hand.
He stopped.
Dad continued.
“And do not let Adrian leave the house with that document.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Because if it’s the original, your husband just handed you proof that he has been moving money through your name for almost seven years.”
I looked at Adrian.
His lips parted.
Then my father said one final sentence.
“And Clara?”
“Yes?”
“Vanessa isn’t the reason he’s divorcing you.”
I stared at the blonde woman holding her cheek.
“What is?”
Dad answered:
May you like
“He thinks you’re about to discover who actually owns the Vale mansion.”
And Adrian’s eyes told me he already knew I had.
