Chapter 5 - THE CHILD BEFORE ME

Her name was Lucy Vale.
Eleven.
Mother:
Sarah Whitmore.
Former employee at Vale Development.
Adrian had been twenty-eight.
Sarah twenty-four.
Short relationship.
Pregnancy.
Then a private settlement.
I stared at the documents.
“Why doesn’t Lucy control the trust?”
Eleanor looked ashamed.
“Because Adrian never legally acknowledged paternity.”
“Does he know she’s his?”
“Yes.”
“DNA?”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
“Because my husband was still alive then.”
“So?”
“He threatened to disinherit Adrian.”
My stomach turned.
Adrian chose inheritance over his daughter.
“What happened to Sarah?”
“She moved to Colorado.”
“Does Lucy know?”
“I don’t know.”
Of course.
Another child converted into paperwork.
Then the trust language became more important.
First legally recognized descendant.
Adrian’s unborn baby with Vanessa could trigger control if acknowledged.
Unless Lucy’s paternity was formally established first.
Then Lucy would outrank Vanessa’s baby chronologically.
That meant Adrian’s current plan depended on keeping Lucy hidden.
I asked Eleanor:
“Why tell me?”
She stared at her hands.
“Because Adrian is becoming his father.”
I almost laughed.
“You waited eleven years.”
“Yes.”
“And eight years of my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“Why now?”
“Because he hit you in front of people.”
That was the threshold?
Private control tolerated.
Public violence changed the equation.
I understood the cowardice.
Didn’t accept it.
Then Sarah Whitmore contacted Rachel after receiving a legal inquiry.
She did not want publicity.
Fair.
She agreed to speak privately.
Her story was worse.
Adrian had visited Lucy twice a year when she was small.
Then stopped when he met me.
I stared.
“He stopped because of me?”
Sarah shook her head.
“No. Because he thought marriage to you could secure Northstar money.”
That hurt differently.
Our relationship had business value from the beginning.
“Did he love me?”
Sarah looked uncomfortable.
“I wouldn’t know.”
Good answer.
Then she said:
“He talked about your father a lot.”
“What?”
“He said marrying into the Northstar family would solve Vale debt.”
I felt sick.
Adrian met me at a charity gala.
He said he admired how uninterested I seemed in wealthy men.
Maybe he admired my balance sheet.
Sarah continued.
“But he also sounded obsessed with making you love him.”
Both things.
Again.
People can manipulate and love.
Greed does not cancel attachment.
It corrupts it.
Sarah had one condition.
“I don’t want Lucy dragged into this.”
“We won’t.”
“Adrian might.”
That mattered.
Then Sarah showed us messages from Eleanor.
For years, Eleanor secretly sent birthday gifts to Lucy.
So Eleanor’s claim of recent guilt was incomplete.
She had maintained connection.
Quietly.
Still hidden.
Why?
Because she feared the trust.
The same fear controlling everyone.
Then Sarah produced a 2018 message from Adrian.
If Clara ever has a child, everything changes. Until then, Lucy stays out of the paperwork.
My hands shook.
He had reduced both children to succession order.
Then another message:
If Clara finds out about Lucy, I lose Northstar and probably the marriage.
Sarah had replied:
Then tell her before she finds out.
Adrian:
You don’t understand Clara.
I whispered:
“No. He didn’t.”
Then Rachel received a financial disclosure from Adrian’s side.
He had moved $9.2 million the morning after the ballroom incident.
Where?
Offshore account.
Beneficiary:
Vanessa Cole.
Why give his mistress nine million dollars while filing for divorce?
Protection?
Escape?
Then a second document appeared.
The transfer was not Adrian’s money.
It came from one of the LLCs bearing my forged signature.
He had moved assets legally attributed to me.
If the transaction failed, I could appear responsible.
May you like
Adrian was preparing not only to leave me.
He was preparing to make me look like the thief.
