Chapter 8 - THE RECORDINGS

The recordings did not help Adrian the way he expected.
One captured me crying.
One captured me yelling.
Several showed me apologizing.
Taken alone, ugly.
Then context.
Before each, Adrian’s voice.
“Say it.”
“Admit you’re unstable.”
“Tell me you need me.”
“No one else will put up with this.”
In one recording, I begged him not to lock me out of our bank account.
He answered:
“You don’t earn enough to understand what I’m protecting.”
I was a foundation director then.
I earned plenty.
Not the point.
Money became authority.
Another recording:
“You’re lucky I married you after what your father did.”
“What did Dad do?”
“Made you impossible.”
“What does that mean?”
“You think you’re entitled to choices.”
There.
His worldview.
Then the worst.
Four years ago.
After my miscarriage.
My voice weak.
“Something feels wrong.”
Adrian:
“The doctor said you’re fine.”
“I’m bleeding.”
“You always catastrophize.”
“Please take me back.”
“You need sleep.”
Then Eleanor’s voice in background:
“Give her another capsule.”
Silence in Rachel’s office.
I stopped the recording.
“What capsule?”
No one knew.
The pharmacy records might.
We matched date.
Compounded prenatal.
Same batch under investigation.
I took extra because they told me to.
Not intentional poisoning necessarily.
But reckless administration after I reported worsening bleeding.
The medical expert reviewed.
The higher aspirin dose could have worsened bleeding.
Could it have caused pregnancy loss?
Still uncertain.
But Adrian and Eleanor ignored symptoms and gave more medication.
That fact mattered regardless of causation.
My mother had written one letter days later.
Clara, you sounded strange on the phone. I’m coming tomorrow.
Adrian intercepted it.
Mom did come.
Security log showed her car at the gate.
Adrian told staff I was sleeping and did not want visitors.
I never knew.
I sat in Rachel’s office and cried for the first time since the ballroom.
Not over the miscarriage.
Over the gate.
My mother had been outside.
I thought she had abandoned me.
She died believing I rejected her.
That was the cruelty I could finally name.
Not only Adrian hurting me.
Adrian controlling who I believed loved me.
Vanessa heard about the recordings through her lawyer.
Then delivered something else.
Her own texts with Adrian.
Two years earlier:
Vanessa: Tell Clara.
Adrian: Not until the shares are safe.
Vanessa: This is getting sick.
Adrian: You like the apartment.
Vanessa: Don’t do that.
Adrian: Then stop pretending you’re innocent.
That changed Vanessa too.
She had objected.
Then stayed.
Accepted apartment.
Jewelry.
Trips.
She was complicit.
Also controlled.
Both.
Then another text:
Vanessa: What if Clara gets pregnant again?
Adrian: She won’t.
My skin went cold.
“What did he mean?”
Vanessa said:
“I thought he meant you stopped trying.”
We hadn’t.
At least I hadn’t.
Adrian told me his sperm count was low and fertility treatment would be pointless.
Another lie.
Then my medical records showed something else.
Birth-control hormone detected in a blood panel during a wellness exam.
I was not taking contraception.
Could lab error happen?
Yes.
We checked.
Repeated marker six months later.
Where from?
The compounded “hormone balance” capsules Adrian encouraged me to take after miscarriage.
He said they supported fertility.
The pharmacy formula contained synthetic progestin.
Not standard contraceptive dosage.
But enough potentially to alter ovulation.
Again:
Not secret sterilization.
Not cinematic poisoning.
Medical interference without informed consent.
Adrian had been controlling whether I could conceive while pretending we were trying.
Why?
Because my child would complicate Vale succession.
Until his financial structure was secure.
I stared at the documents.
He wanted a child.
Just not when that child would give me leverage.
My body had become another corporate timeline.
Then Rachel turned to the final safe recording.
Date:
Two nights before the ballroom.
Adrian speaking with Eleanor.
Eleanor:
“If Clara sees the Northstar audit, it’s over.”
Adrian:
“She’ll sign.”
Eleanor:
“And if she doesn’t?”
Adrian:
“Then Vanessa’s pregnancy goes public, Clara loses control, and we use the incapacity filing.”
Eleanor:
“Your father would be ashamed.”
Adrian laughed.
“No. Dad taught me this.”
A man I had never considered suddenly entered the story.
Adrian’s deceased father.
May you like
Richard Vale.
What exactly had he taught his son?
